The Machinist III manufactures precise parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or verbal instructions using computer- and mechanically-controlled machine tools. This role involves setting up and operating mills, lathes, CNC equipment, grinders, and other machining tools using mathematical and geometrical calculations. The machinist uses precision measuring instruments to check and maintain tolerances, installs and adjusts cutting tools and workpieces, monitors machine feed and speed, and inspects completed products for defects. Work may include complex or prototype machining and assisting engineers with product development and process improvements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and maintain CNC milling and turning centers following complex blueprints and specifications.
- Retrieve and review job information, including drawings, tool lists, routings, and work instructions.
- Select appropriate cutting tools and workholding for various materials and machining processes.
- Document production quantities and processes using ERP or systems.
- Perform precise measurements and inspections to ensure parts meet strict quality standards.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize machining efficiency and workflow.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment in accordance with safety protocols.
- Assist in developing new machining methods, tools, and processes for complex parts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience and Education
- 6–8 years of relevant machining experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; advanced technical training preferred
Technical Skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Knowledge of customer specifications and requirements
- Basic computer literacy
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.)
- Solid understanding of basic math, including fractions
