Refine manufacturing routing for better outcomes. Optimize tooling and consumable cost for effective and profitable operation of the metal processing team. Create CNC programs for the machines when & where needed including R &D. Be the change in improving HSE, Quality, On time delivery, Cost, and Productivity KPI’s for the department. Help department leader in achieving budget objectives by helping make vs buy decisions and create resources such as tooling, fixtures, and codes to succeed. Help the team achieve effective machine scheduling with best practice. Coach and mentor operators in learning new techniques and methods.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the supervisor in developing a safe workplace and building quality in everything that gets done at ATRO.
- Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
- Instruct production personnel in proper operation of machines and/or tools required to perform the job duties under supervisor/Tool maker guidance.
- Assist supervisor in cross training other associates.
- Make periodic checks to ensure quality process is in place with in-line and offline inspections under the guideline of quality department and established procedures.
- Assist associates performing all required SPC inspections and facilitate use of SPC & OEE software in the department.
- Must be able to read Blueprints/Geometric tolerances.
- Must be capable of reading and editing existing programs (preference will be given to those who can write new programs) in mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
- Ability to machine tight tolerance components and assemblies using manual and/or CNC machine tools to make or modify parts, weldments, and assemblies. Applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, layout, and good machining procedures
- Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; tramming heads.
- Experience and knowledge required for advanced machine tools (i.e. CNC Mill /Lathe).
- Instrumentation /Gaging skills required. Must be familiar with machinist tools and hand tools (micrometers, verniers, indicators, scales, dial bore gage).
- Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
- Operate typical machine shop equipment to support daily production including but not limited to mills, lathes, drill presses, surface grinders, grinders, sanders, and saws.
- Ability or willingness to learn to use 3D and 2D CAD/CAM software such as CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, MASTERCAM and AUTOCAD to view and/or extract components from solid model assemblies to generate toolpaths and detailed drawings.
- Work with minimal supervision and limited detailed drawings or blueprints.
- Must be able to interpret verbal or written instructions and work independently to complete jobs from set up to final inspection.
- Work closely with managers, engineers, and technicians to produce a wide variety of components, weldments, and assemblies.
- General shop responsibilities (i.e. help ensure a safe working environment, equipment maintenance and repair, housekeeping duties, organization of shop materials and supplies
Education and/or experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Associates degree or Vocational Certificate in CNC Machining or Industrial Technology; and 1-2 years of experience; or 3-5 years or equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
- 1-2 years minimum experience as a Tool room machinist or Research and Development Machinist with desire to grow to a tool or die maker
- 3 years minimum experience as a Manual Machinist or 3 years minimum experience as a CNC Machinist/Programmer
- Experience working with a wide range of materials from hardened tool steels to plastics (i.e. tool steels, pre-hardened steels, stainless steels, low carbon steels, aluminum, plastics, copper, and brass)
- Welding/Fabrication & sheet metal knowledge and experience is a plus
- Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines.
- Work efficiently and productively in independent and team settings.
- Communicate clearly using excellent written and verbal skills.
- Strong organization skills with meticulous attention to detail
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds, stand continuously and work a 10 hour shift or overtime as needed.
