Job summary

Armstrong World Industries in Chicago, IL, is seeking a Computational Designer to assist in developing and maintaining software that translates design intent into fabrication-ready workflows. Responsibilities

  • Assist the Computational Design Team on new software development and maintenance.
  • Translate design intent into computational logic that supports fabrication and documentation.
  • Assist with the training and implementation of new tools and processes.
  • Improve and update existing design software and parametric tools as new variables and limitations are encountered.
  • Verify new and existing tools for custom design projects, including review of machining steps.
  • Collaborate with end-users to optimize UI/UX workflows and address considerations impacting product design and manufacturing.

The estimated base salary range for this role is “$78,000 to $90,000” per year.
Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience and other relevant factors

Turf Design's Computational Designer is responsible for assisting the development, verification, and execution of computational tools for the design‑to‑fabrication process and assisting the Computational Design Team with organizational goals.

What will you do?

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Computational Design, Industrial Design, or related field.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in Computational design or fabrication environment ideally involving parametric modeling, scripting/programming, CAD/CAM software, digital fabrication workflows or related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, Grasshopper, and Rhino3D

  • Understand the architectural specification process and production of shop drawings.

  • Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and complex information to both technical and non-technical audience.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing innovative computational design and digital fabrication projects.
  • Passion for computational design thinking and a curiosity to learn.

  • Experience with C#, React, ML pipelines
  • Demonstrates basic skills in Revit
