Job summary

Armstrong World Industries in Chicago is seeking a Computational Designer to join the design team, translating design intent into computational logic for fabrication and documentation.

Required is a Bachelor’s in Architecture, Computational Design, Industrial Design, or related field, 2-3 years of experience, and proficiency in Python, Grasshopper, and Rhino3D.

Relocation is offered for a full-time position with exposure to advanced tools and workflows.

  • 2-3 years’ experience in Computational design or fabrication environment ideally involving parametric modeling, scripting/programming, CAD/CAM software, digital fabrication workflows or related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, Grasshopper, and Rhino3D

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Computational Design Team on new software development and maintenance.
  • Translate design intent into computational logic that supports fabrication and documentation.
  • Assist with the training and implementation of new tools and processes.
  • Improve and update existing design software and parametric tools as new variables and limitations are encountered.
  • Verify new and existing tools for custom design projects, including review of machining steps.
  • Collaborate with end-users to optimize UI/UX workflows and address any considerations that might impact product design and manufacturing.

The estimated base salary range for this role is “$78,000 to $90,000” per year.

Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience and other relevant factors

What will you do?

Required Qualifications

  • Comfortable in high-tolerance CAD/CAM production environment via CNC.
  • Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and complex information to both technical and non-technical audience.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing innovative computational design and digital fabrication projects.
  • Passion for computational design thinking and a curiosity to learn.

  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Computational Design, Industrial Design, or related field
  • Experience with C#, React, ML pipelines
  • Demonstrates basic skills in Revit
  • Basic understanding of Git and CI/CD workflows
