Responsibilities include research, design, development, analysis, operation, and support of high performance computing (HPC) and data science research, software, tools and hardware resources. Generic Scope

Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope

Applies computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, to oversee team of research and technical staff performing highly complex HPC / Data / CI research, technology and software development. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and / or the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff, according to established policies and management guidance, to achieve research and technology goals. Provide priority setting and research and technology workflow analysis. Reviews and approves recommendations for HPC / Data / CI research, development and technology programs and initiatives.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Req / Pref

• Demonstrated ability to lead a technical staff of HPC / Data / CI and / or scientific personnel, including projects performed by multiple developers REQ
• Solid knowledge of research and development methods, HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, implementation and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools REQ
• Demonstrated critical thinking, persuasion / negotiation, conflict resolution, mentoring and staff development, supervision, problem solving, human resources policies and procedures relating to management responsibilities REQ
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences REQ
• Demonstrated experience working in a complex computing / data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools / software, and diverse domain science application base REQ
• Demonstrated ability to initiate research proposals and acquire funding REQ
• Demonstrated research and technology project leadership and management skills REQ
