Job description

Join to apply for the Composites Structures Research Engineer role at Amentum.

Seeking an entry-level to experienced Composites Structures Research Engineer with a bachelor’s, master’s, or a Ph.D. in chemical, materials, or mechanical engineering. Responsibilities include supporting advancements in rocket propulsion technology, interfacing with Air Force science personnel, and working in a team environment with technical professionals and researchers. Candidates should have knowledge of fiber reinforced polymer composite materials such as carbon, aramid, and/or glass fiber, and basic knowledge of composite specimen manufacture. Experience with CAD tools like Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks is required for designing and modeling test hardware and articles. Duties include designing, fabricating, and testing composite materials, from basic coupons to complex rocket components, and characterizing materials using tools like DMA, DSC, rheology, TMA, TGA, and mechanical load testing.

This is a full-time position with benefits including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401k, paid holidays, PTO, and sick leave. The salary range is $70K to $126K.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Designing, fabricating, and testing composite materials and rocket components.
  2. Characterizing materials using analytical tools.
  3. Using CAD tools to design and model hardware.
  4. Contributing to technical reports, papers, and conference presentations.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in chemical, materials, or mechanical engineering.
  • Knowledge of fiber reinforced polymer composites.
  • Basic composite manufacturing knowledge.
  • Experience with CAD tools (Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks).
  • Organized, punctual, self-motivated, team player, and good communicator.
  • U.S. Citizen with a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a Security Clearance.
Physical and Work Environment:
  • Physical lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Primarily inside work, some hazardous conditions involving energetic materials.
  • Extended periods of standing or sitting.
