Job summary

FMI Composites in Winston-Salem, NC is hiring a Composite Operator I – Hi-Temp to safely operate high-temperature furnaces, ovens, and related equipment, load/unload materials, and support production.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, at least 1 year of manufacturing experience, a strong safety focus, and the ability to work with precision measuring tools. Shift assignments include B, C, and D with 4p–4a or 4a–4p schedules; PTO and holidays are provided.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1+ year manufacturing experience preferred.
  • U.S. citizen with ability to obtain security clearance and export-control access.

Responsibilities

  • Follow work instructions, procedures, safety requirements, diagrams, and schedules.
  • Fabricate, process, inspect, and package composite materials with safety and quality focus.
  • Operate furnaces, ovens, and presses; load, unload, startup, and shutdown activities.
  • Monitor equipment and processes; troubleshoot and participate in continuous improvement.
  • Inspect materials and perform quality checks using scales, calipers, gauges, and other tools.
  • Record inspection results and enter production records and safety/quality docs.
  • Move materials safely with hoists and pallet jacks; use PPE and respirator as required.
  • Perform routine light equipment maintenance and keep a clean work area.
  • Work safely around moving equipment, fumes, noise, and electrical hazards.
  • Cross-train and assist teammates in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

FMI is seeking a Composite Operator I – Hi-Temp to join our manufacturing team. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of high-temperature furnaces, ovens, and related equipment, including loading and unloading materials, monitoring equipment during operation, and supporting the overall production process. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and experience working with industrial or manufacturing equipment.

Job Responsibilities
  • Follow work instructions, production procedures, specifications, safety requirements, diagrams, and schedules.
  • Fabricate, process, inspect, and package composite materials while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Operate production equipment, including furnaces, ovens, and presses; perform loading, unloading, startup, and shutdown activities.
  • Monitor equipment and processes, respond to issues, and participate in troubleshooting and continuous improvement activities.
  • Inspect materials and perform quality checks using scales, calipers, gauges, and other measuring tools.
  • Record inspection results and complete required computer entries, production records, equipment logs, and safety and quality documentation.
  • Safely move materials using hoists, electric pallet jacks, and other approved material‑handling equipment.
  • Perform routine light equipment maintenance and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Work safely in a manufacturing environment with exposure to moving equipment, fumes, airborne particles, loud noise, heights, chemicals, electrical hazards, and vibration.
  • Cross-train and assist coworkers to support a flexible, team-oriented production environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What We Need From You
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1+ year of manufacturing or related experience preferred; composites, textiles, or similar manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for this position. This position also requires access to export-controlled information for which U.S. Person status is required under applicable U.S. export control laws and regulations.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and attention to detail.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn equipment operation, troubleshooting, and production processes.
  • Ability to understand and follow written, verbal, diagram, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Basic math, measurement, computer, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, reach, use hands, and lift or move up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring close and color vision and wear required PPE, including a respirator.
