Meriwest Credit Union in San Jose, CA is seeking a Compliance Specialist to support the Compliance Officer and management team in developing, implementing, and maintaining the credit union’s Compliance Program. You will collaborate with auditors, examiners, and vendors to identify, monitor, and mitigate regulatory risk.

The role requires ensuring all duties comply with policies and laws, including BSA/Patriot Act and OFAC.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of similar or related experience.
  • Banking experience or familiarity with Symitar is a plus.
  • Certifications in Compliance and ERM are a plus.
  • Strong confidentiality, trust, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to balance risk management with customer service.

Position Summary

The Compliance Specialist is responsible for assisting the Compliance Officer/Management Team in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the credit union’s Compliance Program. This role is expected to collaborate with internal stakeholders, auditors, examiners, and third-party vendors to ensure regulatory risk is identified, monitored, and mitigated.

The Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all aspects and duties of this role are handled efficiently and accurately in accordance with credit union established policies and procedures and all governmental rules, regulations and laws pertaining to the functions performed in this department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Keeps informed about federal and state compliance rules, laws, regulations, and best practices as they relate to the Credit Union. Assists with reporting changes, as appropriate, to affected departments, and under the direction of the Compliance Officer and Management Team.
  • Reviews research for compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and internal policies, to communicate to the appropriate credit union staff, managers, and executives.
  • Is responsible for assisting in the development and maintenance of the Compliance Management Program.
  • Assesses and advises management on regulatory compliance risk.
  • Assists to ensure that Board of Directors, management, and employees are in compliance with the rules and regulations of regulatory agencies and that company policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and providing guidance, within the scope of responsibility, on all aspects of credit union compliance, including but not limited to new and changed regulations; new, modified, and expanded products and services; changes in processes; and customer complaints.
  • Preparing disclosures for new product(s) or services(s).
  • Assists with the review of all company forms, disclosures, member publications, advertisements, and the website to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Assists with revising and maintaining policies and procedures for the general operation of compliance management, under the direction of the Compliance Officer and Management Team.
  • Must understand all applicable laws and regulations that apply to the position and comply with the requirements.
  • Provide responses to compliance inquiries as they related to the various federal and state banking regulations and internal processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for the completion of all compliance training related to the position.
  • Follow compliance schedule and perform all tasks effectively and timely.
  • Providing support to the Compliance Officer/Management Team for the ERM program and supporting policies, procedures, and software.
  • Providing support to the Compliance Officer for ERMCO by preparing ERMCO Agenda and Packet, attending meetings, preparing meeting minutes, and relevant duties.
  • Providing support in coordinating ERM risk assessment matrix reviews with Credit Union functional areas, analyzes the results, and prepares ERMCO and Board Summary reports.
  • Managing the preparation and coordination of regulatory examinations and internal or external audits.
  • Coordinating information gathering activities for audit and examination engagements.
  • Lead or assist with the validation of corrective actions related to exam or audit recommendations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must comply with all company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Three years to five years of similar or related experience.
  • Experience with banking or Symitar system is a plus.
  • Certifications in Compliance and ERM a plus.
  • A significant level of confidentiality, trust, and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature.
  • Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary.
  • Ability to carry out multiple tasks, ability to spot issues and analyze complex problems quickly and thoroughly and have attention to detail.
  • Detail-oriented, excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and oral are required.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, and other software packages and PC literate
  • Must possess leadership skills.
  • Excellent time management skills to meet the daily need of the department and assigned projects.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate/communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to balance risk management with customer service in everyday duties.
  • Work independently and with others.

Target Range: $37.87 to $47.34*

The target range for entry in a new position is between the minimum and midpoint of the range, depending on experience and qualifications.
