Responsibilities

• Prepare specimens for laboratory testing and screening.
• Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture and finger sticks.
• Verify test requisitions by comparing information with physician orders.
• Alter methods for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients when needed.
• Perform quality control procedures and instrument checks.
• Use correct anticoagulant for specimen collection.
• Notify care team if unable to obtain specimen in a timely manner.
• Meet documentation standards and policies.
• Collaborate with Director, Pathologist and lab staff.
• Consult with departments to support patient care and improvement.
• Maintain patient safety and reduce errors.
• Follow standard precautions at all times.
• Maintain specimen quality per department standards.
• Stay informed on new testing methods and technologies.
• Keep knowledge of hospital policy and regulatory requirements.
• Be adaptable under stress and support team concepts.
• Assist in training new employees.
