Job summary

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, NJ is seeking a Mental Health Assistant to join our caring team. You will perform patient care tasks, assist with daily living activities, monitor vital signs, and support treatment plans under the supervision of registered nurses.

Qualifications

• Heart Saver/CPR certification required.
• Technical skills required for patient care.
• Must pass Nursing Attendant test administered by BMC.
• Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for OPS.
• Good organizational skills.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Must be computer literate.
• Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
• High School graduation or equivalent required.
• Successful completion of an approved Nurse's Aide training course preferred.

Responsibilities

• Patient care responsibilities delivered with knowledge of patient growth and development and appropriate to patient ages.
• Takes and records TPR and reports deviations to nurse.
• Obtains specimens as assigned (e.g., urine, stool, sputum).
• Weighs patient and records weight.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living including skin care and meals.
• Records oral intake and urinary output.
• Performs treatments (e.g., changes simple dressings).
• Communicates effectively with charge/primary nurse regarding patients' needs.
• Orients patient to environment and builds rapport with patients and family.
• Assists in patient management including de-escalation and containment under RN direction.
• Performs admission and unit checks to ensure safety.
• Keeps unit clean and prepares bedside for new admissions.
• Applies infection control and safety principles.
• Reports significant unit problems to charge nurse.
• Monitors visiting sessions as assigned.
• Assists in transporting patients for activities and tests.
• Supports unit activities and therapeutic activities as directed by RN.
• Maintains a safe unit environment and adheres to Code of Conduct.
• Participates in CQI activities and unit committees.
