Do you have an interest in serving the public and working for a great city? Join Brooklyn Center and be a part of an amazing group of city employees who are proud of the work they do every day. The Police Department is currently recruiting for Community Service Officers.

This position is responsible for providing support services for all divisions of the Police Department and assistance to other City departments as assigned. This is a non-sworn, uniformed position. Reports to a police sergeant. Must be able to work two 12 hour shifts per week.

Candidates that have less than 6 months of law enforcement education remaining to be POST eligible will be considered overqualified for this position.

Code Enforcement

  • Enforces relevant city ordinances which do not require a sworn officer including, but not limited to, parking, bicycle and sign ordinances according to established city ordinance, policy or code.
  • Performs activities including, but not limited to, investigating abandoned vehicles and answering zoning, trash and snow complaints.
  • Assists motorists and citizens with lockouts or house checks.

Animal Control

  • Assists with animal control functions.
  • Responds to complaints of barking dogs or other nuisances created by pets and animals.
  • Enforces ordinances related to animal control.
  • Impounds loose, abandoned, vicious, or rabid animals including disposal of dead animal carcasses.

Jail/Detention

  • May perform duties relevant to booking of both adult and juvenile prisoners including, but not limited to, fingerprinting, photographing and lodging of prisoners.
  • Monitors and attends to needs of prisoners.
  • May transport prisoners.

General

  • Assists and aids the public and their inquiries.
  • Renders aid and assistance to the general public.
  • Responds as assigned to assist officers or fire department personnel with traffic direction and control.
  • Assists in the recovery and inventorying of lost, stolen, abandoned, and/or confiscated property.
  • Controls and directs motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  • Prepares clear, accurate and concise reports of activities consistent with department policy.
  • Serves court notices and subpoenas as directed.
  • Presents testimony in court relating to duties performed.
  • Accurately maintain and submit a daily activity log.
  • Transport department vehicles to appropriate locations for servicing and maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years or older at time of appointment.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota Driver's License.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers.
  • Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Desirable Training and Experience

  • Experience with law enforcement or security.
  • Experience in dealing with the public.
  • Computer experience.
  • Education in or actively enrolled in an accredited law enforcement program.
  • Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above.
  • Ability to speak, read or write any language other than English, including sign language.
