To maintain the communications and related technical support of the uniformed police staff. To assist members of the university community who may come to the Public Safety Department seeking aid.

To maintain the communications and related technical support of the uniformed police staff. To assist members of the university community who may come to the Public Safety Department seeking aid.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this classification are unique to the campus. There are not similar positions in other departments. The Department operates on a 24–hour–a–day schedule and community service officers must be able to work any shift. They must exercise considerable discretion while being responsible for maintaining order and safety for all members of the University community. The person assigned to this position must be of high moral standards, neat, personable, articulate and capable of maintaining his/her composure under stressful situations.

Essential Duties

  • Community Service Officers will engage with the University community daily and generally interact with a diverse set of people in a casual, friendly, and compassionate manner.
  • Perform periodic patrols of assigned buildings and grounds of the University. Must have the ability to climb stairs, to check all floors of assigned building areas. Physically check exterior doors, windows, etc. to determine that they are secure. Request identification of persons in buildings after hours. Must have the ability to drive a patrol vehicle and operate a two-way radio and other electronic equipment while patrolling grounds.
  • Perform all duties within the Dispatch Center. Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to answer the phone and dispatch several officers at the same time. Prepare, type, operate, and monitor CCTV cameras, computerized access security systems, University buildings and houses, access systems, and emergency phone monitor systems.
  • Provide courtesy escorts. Walk or transport students between various locations on campus as requested.
  • Assist with the response to all alarms, fire and security, contacting necessary personnel such as fire and police departments, ambulance services as requested by shift supervisors or Officers in Charge.
  • Understand the rules and regulations of the University. Assist Public Safety sworn staff with investigating complaints and other situations that fall within the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety.
  • Must be able to successfully pass and maintain First Responder Medical Certification. Assist with response to all emergencies, medical, fire, etc., and the completion of necessary paperwork. Must be able to administer C.P.R., basic first aid, and medical treatment.
  • Community Service Officers may be assigned to work with a group from the University community and act as an ambassador for both the university and the Department of Public Safety.
  • Community Service Officers may be assigned to a specific specialty, which will benefit the C.S.O., the Department, and the University community. Such specialties could include, but are not limited to, Emergency Medical Technician, Student Cadet Liaison, Bike Officer, etc.

Marginal Duties

  • Enter parking date into software programs.
  • Ability to take I.D. Photos for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Maintain all department and university files.
  • Maintain department and university-owned equipment.
  • Attend staff and other meetings/ obligations.

Required Knowledge, Skill And Abilities

Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the essential functions of the job.

Ergonomic Requirements

  • Must be able to run in certain situations.
  • Must be able to possess and demonstrate self-defense skills when called upon.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Ability to climb stairs, walk, or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle under all types of conditions.
  • Must be able to identify and accurately relay a person’s specific physical characteristics, read letters and numbers clearly from a distance.
  • Strong customer service, time management, and communication skills.

Hours

Department hours are 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Employees must be able to work any one of the scheduled shifts. The standard shift is 8 hours. Must be able to work overtime as situations arise.

Qualification Standards

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement preferred.
  • Must successfully pass the Department’s Field Training Program for Community Service Officers.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain certification in First Responder and CPR.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Oral interview with Command Staff.
  • Pass a background check.
