Job description

Reed College Community Safety Staff are part of the Office of Student Life and a team that supports student success and the mission of the college. The Office of Community Safety fulfills campus safety and security needs by providing a wide range of services, including overseeing emergency preparedness, assisting students, responding to reports of medical and mental health emergencies, reacting to fire and other alarms, and many more supportive services for the campus community. At Reed, Community Safety responsibilities begin with connecting with students, staff, and faculty as community partners. While we receive training typical of traditional security staff, we emphasize service to the community and collaboration across the college. Learn more about our Community Safety staff here.

We train all new hires on the job through our two-month Field Training Evaluation Program, with extensive, ongoing in-service training. Successful candidates come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

This is a full-time position scheduled to work 40 hours per week. The night shift position is scheduled from 9 pm to 7 am. There may be times when you are asked to work a shift outside your normal schedule. Starting pay is $21.82 per hour plus a night shift differential of $1.25 per hour.

What You’ll Do

  • Survey and evaluate campus environment for safety and security hazards.
  • Respond to medical incidents, fire-related emergencies, alarms, and notifications from alarm systems, including for a nuclear reactor.
  • Respond to all other incidents of crime and campus emergencies, providing crisis intervention in a higher education setting.
  • Engage in conversation with students and other members of the campus community.
  • Route calls on the main college switchboard.
  • Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls from the college community.

Qualifications

  • A valid driver’s license at the time of hire and comfort driving in emergency situations.
  • Experience in customer service and working overnight shifts is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain DPSST certification (training will be facilitated after hiring).
