Job summary

City of Minneapolis is seeking a Community Safety Ambassador to patrol cultural corridors, engage residents, businesses, and visitors, and connect people to city services and resources. You will walk the districts, build trust, and help prevent violence outside traditional policing.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, at least one year in community-facing roles, and CPR/First Aid with Narcan training.

Job description

The mission of the Community Safety Ambassador position is to create a safe, welcoming, and connected environment along Minneapolis’ cultural corridors by serving as a trusted, approachable presence in the community. Ambassadors exist to support residents, businesses, and visitors by helping them navigate city services, sharing resources, and connecting those in need to assistance. Through proactive engagement, walking the corridors, and building strong relationships, ambassadors help calm tensions, prevent violence, and foster trust. With specialized training in CPR/First Aid, de-escalation, youth safety, and crisis response, the position plays a vital role in strengthening community well-being and promoting safety outside of traditional law enforcement responses.

This position is temporary for 2026 and will become a permanent position in 2027.

1. Provide visible foot patrols to deter unwanted activity, enhance safety, and engage with residents, businesses, and visitors. Assess situations for intervention; disengage and call 911 if unsafe.
2. Document daily activities and incidents; report issues to supervisors and coordinate with law enforcement, social services, and property owners.
3. Offer a welcoming, helpful presence; provide directions, event information, and service referrals to community members and visitors.
4. Respond to public intoxication, loitering, and aggressive behavior; provide education and referrals to outreach services.
5. Respond to calls from the Safety Communications Center; assess hazards, disturbances, or property concerns; collaborate with emergency responders.
6. Distribute brochures, hotline details, and prevention resources; act as point of contact for inquiries.
7. Conduct business check-ins; collaborate with safety partners, violence interrupters, and city contractors.
8. Provide walking escorts for community members within district boundaries upon request.
9. Administer first aid, CPR, and Narcan when needed until emergency responders arrive.
10. Complete initial and ongoing training in de-escalation, CPR/First Aid, customer service, and cultural sensitivity. Maintain licenses and certifications.
11. Maintain the cleanliness of the corridor or area, including trash, sharps disposals, and reporting to 311 as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Field work which involves potential exposure to dangerous individuals and situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

One year of related work experience in community-facing roles that emphasize public engagement, conflict resolution, and safety support.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

Background Check

The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Union Representation

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis.

Eligible List Statement

The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire two months after it has been established.

Interview Selection

The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
