Position Summary:

The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for prospecting retail donors and donations. This position implements strategies to find and grow strategic community partnerships, provide data to assist in informing DGR (Donated Goods Retail) growth strategy, and expand the GCI donor base while increasing organization material donations. In this role there will be occasional coordination of donations or donation events that will require support during evenings or weekends as needed.


Essential Functions:
  • Prospect, initiate, and develop long-term relationships with companies, organizations, schools, churches, neighborhood associations, sports teams, etc. to increase donations of goods.
  • Implement and coordinate donation acquisition programs and services in partnership with Retail Operations Leadership.
  • Track, analyze, and report program results to inform strategic planning and new initiatives to drive increases in good quality donations while ensuring current program development and growth.
  • Maintain a donations tracking system including donations metrics and providing the ability to forecast trends.
  • Lead donation acquisition initiatives to support maintaining and increasing GCI’s market share while preventing loss of market share to other entities. Analyze current and future threats to GCI’s donation stream.
  • Collaborate with Retail Operations Leadership to plan and coordinate transportation within donation acquisition initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing team to implement donation acquisition initiatives.
  • Attend meetings, events, or conferences within GCI territory to engage in education, partnership, and growing the market share for donated goods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills And Abilities:
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Communicates effectively in written and verbal formats; experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to make data informed decisions and measure results; experience negotiating sales and commitments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure, maintain organization, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Access to reliable transportation for regular participation in work and travel within our central Iowa territory stores.
  • Possession of a valid Iowa Driver’s License, a good driving record, and able to provide proof of personal vehicle insurance with a minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident auto insurance liability coverage.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and dependent adult and child abuse background check.

Required Education And Experience:
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with an emphasis on business or marketing.
  • Combination of 3 years of relevant work experience, military service, higher education, and leadership or management experience.
  • Experience in sales, marketing, and building organizational relationships.
  • Goodwill experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to carry, lift, push or pull up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate variations in work environment temperature.
  • Ability to remain stationary or mobile for long periods of time.
  • Ability to navigate throughout the retail stores, warehouse, and headquarters locations.
  • Ability to remain stationary to perform computer work for long periods of time.
