Position Summary:

The Community Youth Athletics & Activities Program Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and facilitating safe, engaging, and culturally meaningful opportunities for youth and families in the Yakutat community.

The position will support the development of community-based youth programming that promotes positive engagement, healthy lifestyles, personal growth, leadership, connection, and positive relationships with family and community. Programming may include youth athletics, recreational activities, educational and enrichment opportunities, vocational and life-skills activities, cultural activities, structured activities for individual youth or groups of youth, and family-centered activities.

The Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with youth, families, community members, Tribal leadership, schools, local organizations, and other community partners to identify community needs and develop programming that is responsive to the interests and strengths of Yakutat youth.

A central responsibility of the position will be working with a Youth Advisory Board to ensure youth have meaningful input into the development, planning, and implementation of program activities. The Program Coordinator should be creative, flexible, collaborative, and willing to build programming from the ground up in response to youth and community needs.

The Program Coordinator will also identify, recruit, and coordinate qualified coaches, chaperones, volunteers, instructors, and activity facilitators to support program activities.

This position requires compliance with Tribe’s compliance standards, including its Standards of Conduct, Compliance Program, and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of the position’s regular performance evaluation.

Essential Functions:
Youth Program Development
  • Develop and coordinate a diverse range of positive youth activities and programming based on identified community needs and youth interests.
  • Work with youth to identify activities, sports, educational opportunities, cultural activities, and other areas of interest.
  • Develop structured opportunities for individual youth, groups of youth, and families.
  • Create opportunities that promote positive youth development, healthy lifestyles, leadership, confidence, skill development, and positive relationships.
  • Develop both recurring and special-event programming throughout the year.
  • Adapt programming based on participation, youth feedback, community needs, available resources, and seasonal considerations.
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate recreational, educational, athletic, vocational, cultural, and community-based activities.
  • Develop programming that is accessible and welcoming to youth with varying interests, abilities, and levels of participation.
Youth Program Development

Youth Advisory Board
  • Provide meaningful opportunities for youth to participate in program planning and decision-making.
  • Facilitate youth-led discussions regarding interests, needs, barriers to participation, and desired activities.
  • Support youth in developing leadership and organizational skills.
  • Incorporate feedback and recommendations from the Youth Advisory Board into program development.
  • Create opportunities for youth to take ownership of activities and assume appropriate leadership roles.
Athletics and Recreation
  • Develop and coordinate youth athletic and recreational opportunities.
  • Identify and coordinate coaches, instructors, officials, chaperones, volunteers, and other activity facilitators as needed.
  • Coordinate practice schedules, activities, equipment, facilities, transportation needs, and other logistical requirements.
  • Support safe and positive participation in athletic and recreational activities.
  • Develop opportunities for youth to participate in both organized and informal recreational activities.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and positive peer relationships.
Cultural Programming
  • Incorporate Tlingit culture, values, traditions, and community knowledge into youth programming in meaningful and appropriate ways.
  • Work with Tribal citizens, Elders, cultural leaders, artists, knowledge keepers, and other community members to identify opportunities for culturally specific activities.
  • Support opportunities for youth to strengthen their connection to culture, family, community, and place.
  • Approach cultural programming with humility, respect, and a willingness to learn.
Family and Community Engagement
  • Develop activities that encourage positive family engagement and intergenerational connection.
  • Coordinate community events and activities that bring youth and families together in safe and positive environments.
  • Build partnerships with Tribal programs, schools, community organizations, local businesses, and other community resources.
  • Identify community members with skills, interests, or expertise who may contribute to youth programming.
  • Promote awareness of available youth and family activities throughout the Yakutat community.
Program Coordination and Administration
  • Develop activity plans, schedules, calendars, and program materials.
  • Coordinate facilities, supplies, equipment, transportation, food, and other logistical needs associated with activities.
  • Maintain appropriate participant records, attendance information, activity documentation, and other required program records.
  • Assist with program outreach and recruitment of youth and families.
  • Assist with development of program policies, procedures, safety protocols, and activity guidelines.
  • Manage program resources and supplies responsibly and in accordance with Tribal policies and grant requirements.
  • Perform other duties related to youth programming as assigned.
  • This position is a Mandatory Reporter.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

This is an entry-level position that reports to the Family Support Services Director. This position has no supervisory or managerial responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska with a clean driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history and background check.
  • This position has been designated as having regular contact or control over Indian children and will require an additional FBI criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with youth, families, community programs, athletics, recreation, education, or a related field.
  • Experience developing and coordinating youth programs or community-based programming (youth athletics, recreation, camps, clubs, or enrichment activities).
  • Experience working with a youth advisory group or other youth-led initiative.
  • Experience recruiting or coordinating coaches, volunteers, chaperones, instructors, or activity facilitators.
  • Experience with grant-funded programs and program documentation.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Experience with positive youth development, trauma-informed practices, or youth leadership development.
  • Commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and positive experiences for youth.
