POSITION SUMMARY
The Community Engagement Specialist I plans, develops, coordinates, and evaluates community and corporate relations activities to positively predispose the public to organ and tissue donation and transplantation, with an emphasis on increasing donor designation rates within the DNWest donation service area. They develop a culture of donation in their regional area and maintain a favorable public image for DNWest. The individual works with volunteers called Donate Life Ambassadors (DLAs) and is responsible for utilizing and developing their regional DLAs.
This individual will actively participate in industry organizations to stay abreast of national efforts, effect change as opportunities arise, increase knowledge of best practices, maintain relationships, and develop collaborative opportunities. This role will ensure regional goals align with departmental, organizational, and national goals for donor designation. The position seeks and implements creative and innovative ideas to further DNWest’s mission and positively impact the culture of donation in the diverse communities served by DNWest.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Outreach
- Participates in educational activities to build understanding of DNWest, the organ procurement industry, and donation opportunities.
- Works with the Director of Community Engagement to develop and execute strategic community outreach marketing programs to increase organ and tissue donation.
- Conducts research to develop a relationship target list for their assigned territory, including community organizations, faith-based groups, healthcare associations, schools, government officials, and others.
- Plans, coordinates, and attends meetings, cultural programs, and events to promote donation.
- Identifies and cultivates relationships with local businesses, organizations, and community groups to raise awareness.
- Stays informed of community events to build trust and DNWest’s brand.
- Builds relationships with community leaders and officials to increase involvement and advocacy.
- Conducts focus groups and surveys to identify community assets, needs, and concerns for culturally relevant marketing.
- Supports the development of outreach materials, invitations, flyers, social media posts, blogs, press releases, and speaking engagements.
- Researches and coordinates speaking opportunities for DNWest staff at relevant events.
- Negotiates contracts with vendors and partners for outreach events.
- Manages budgets for assigned territories and events.
- Coordinates public speaking opportunities across diverse communities.
- Develops campaigns with affinity groups such as DMV, health clinics, hospitals, schools, and faith organizations.
- Establishes relationships with community influencers to impact donation culture.
- Works with marketing to use data for regional community education strategies.
- Collects feedback to improve programs and events.
- Provides weekly updates on activities in the territory.
- Supports volunteer recruitment and DLA training programs.
- Prepares outreach and training materials for volunteers.
- Mentors and recognizes DLAs, assesses their skills, and coordinates volunteer schedules.
- Maintains DLA records in Salesforce.
Media
- Participates in media events and identifies media stories.
- Supports DNWest’s social media channels.
Committee Involvement
- Participates in internal committees and external organizations related to donation and transplantation.

- Flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or Event Planning preferred.
- At least 2 years of community relations experience with community organizations, healthcare agencies, schools, or faith leaders.
- Knowledge of public education, marketing, media relations, business development, and project management.
- Volunteer recruitment experience preferred.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish and English) highly desirable.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must be able to travel within the service area with a valid California driver’s license and insurance.
