Job summary

Cleveland Metroparks is seeking a Community Engagement Assistant - Bilingual to support Zoo Education in engaging multilingual community members and translating messaging into Spanish. This role involves program preparation and assisting with educational activities both inside the zoo and in the local community.

The position is seasonal part-time, requiring flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays, and includes a background check and a valid Ohio driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and cultural competency.
• Written and verbal fluency in Spanish and English is required.
• Ability to engage diverse audiences in zoo programming.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license under Ohio law.
• Background screen including fingerprinting and drug screen is required.

Responsibilities

• Interpret and translate messaging to the Spanish-speaking community and prepare written communications in Spanish.
• Engage community members to inform them of programming opportunities offered.
• Provide interpretation from Spanish to English and vice versa.
• Assist with zoo educational programs at the zoo and off-site in the local community.
• Support Education Specialists with program preparation and materials.
• Participate in special events or projects as assigned.
• Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends.
• Maintain a safe work environment and report hazards promptly.
• Keep supervisor informed of key issues.

Job Description

The Community Engagement Assistant supports the efforts of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Education staff with engaging multilingual community members in learning more about Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the various programming offered and ensuring programming offered is meeting needs of the community we serve. The Community Engagement Assistant will interpret and translate messaging to the Spanish speaking community and prepare written communications in the Spanish language.

• Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
• Assists with community outreach and engagement program by engaging members of the community, including members of the Spanish speaking community, to inform them of programming opportunities offered, and learn the needs of community members to create programming to meet those needs.
• Provides interpretation and translation of the Spanish language to English language
• Assists with conducting community needs assessment and identifying opportunities
• Assists with zoo educational programs within the zoo and off-site in the local community.
• Provides assistance to the Education Specialists with program preparation, organizing program materials, and various administrative tasks.
• Participates in special events or projects as assigned.
• Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends.
• Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
• Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
• Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.

Requirements

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
• Must pass background screen which includes fingerprinting and drug screen.

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with zoo staff, other agencies, and the public.
• Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely, and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
• Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
• Ability to work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
• Written and verbal fluency in the Spanish and English language required.

Work Schedule : This position is seasonal part-time for a six-month period working three 8-hour days a week. Varies, must be available to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
