Generation With Promise (GWP) Program Community Educator

The Generation With Promise (GWP) program collaborates with students, families, teachers, schools, community, and faith-based organizations to foster healthy change from within the community. Participants are equipped with skills and knowledge to lead health improvements at home, school, or in the community. To learn more about this impactful program, watch the video here.

This Community Educator role is based in Macomb County, with a home base at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. The position involves community travel to deliver wellness education focused on nutrition and physical activity to priority populations within Macomb County. The ideal candidate will be comfortable engaging with community members and delivering education effectively.

Position Summary

The Community Educator supports activities related to the school and community-based health education program, GWP, under the guidance of the Program Manager and Senior Project Coordinator. Responsibilities include providing nutrition education and promoting physical activity targeting youth and families eligible for SNAP-Ed in underserved settings. The role involves facilitating group sessions, participating in team meetings, and building relationships with schools, organizations, and community members through presentations and outreach. The Educator may also implement the PE-Nut program, support Student Action Teams, and assist with projects aimed at reducing health disparities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, internal teams, and external partners.
  • Conduct nutrition education and physical activity demonstrations, serving as a role model for teachers and students.
  • Gather and compile data for reports and fact sheets.
  • Utilize evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness.
  • Engage in cultural competency and health disparities interventions to improve care for diverse populations.
  • Maintain strong computer, organizational, and communication skills to professionally represent the program.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Nutrition, Health Administration, or a related field. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in another field with relevant experience.
  • One to two years of experience in coordinating health initiatives with youth, schools, or community programs. Experience with after-school or parent programs is a plus.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience developing curricula, coordinating taste tests and cooking demonstrations, working with educational staff and students, and collaborating with partners is desirable.
