Description:

Position Summary: New York City Public Schools (NYCPS)’s mission is to ensure that each student graduates on a pathway to a rewarding career and long-term economic security, equipped to be a positive force for change. The Office of Student Pathways (Pathways) seeks to ensure all students graduate with real-world skills and experience, a head start on life after high school, and a strong plan to put them on this path.

The Community Education Program Specialist role offers a unique opportunity to champion financial education across NYCPS, starting with the Save for College Program. This position bridges the foundational programmatic work of providing elementary students, families, and staff with financial education activities and content and the broader ambition of embedding financial empowerment system-wide.

Reports to: Senior Director, Financial Empowerment

Direct Reports: N/A

Key Relationships: Works closely with the Division of Family, Community and Student Empowerment (FACSE); the Division of School Leadership (DSL); NYC Kids RISE; Mayor’s Office of Equity; NYC Opportunity; Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the design and facilitation of professional learning sessions focused on financial empowerment for K-12 NYCPS staff, with an emphasis on K-5 educators, administrators, and district leaders.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of workshops for parents and guardians to enhance their understanding of financial literacy and empowerment strategies.
  • Support vetting financial literacy curriculum and resources for K-12 students.
  • Collaborate with school, district, and central office teams to identify professional development needs.
  • Assist with the monitoring and evaluation of the impact of financial empowerment initiatives.
  • Build knowledge base of financial empowerment best practices and share insights.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations and financial institutions.
  • Represent the team at relevant events and maintain cooperation with local agencies.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to school-based and central staff.
  • Collaborate on the development and distribution of tools, resources, and guidance documents.
  • Collaborate on the development and implementation of the communication plan to raise awareness about financial empowerment and literacy programs.

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community-centered activities; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community-centered activities; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above, with at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, finance, social work, or a related field, with at least two years of experience in community work or professional development related to financial literacy.
  • Experience designing and leading professional learning sessions in a K-12 setting.
  • Experience developing and implementing workshops for parents and guardians focused on financial empowerment.
  • Strong understanding of financial literacy concepts.
  • Proven ability to build diverse partnerships.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using data to inform program improvements.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work across K-12 levels.
  • Interest in social media and new technology tools.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office 365 and Google Suite applications.
