Job summary

The City of Des Moines Police Department is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to join an eligibility list for a limited-term assignment of up to 24 months. The role focuses on maintaining community livability through field inspections, education, and enforcement of municipal codes related to property maintenance, zoning, health, and safety.

Under the Chief of Police, the officer investigates violations, processes complaints, and collaborates with the Community Development department.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two years of professional experience in code enforcement, property management, inspections, land use, or related field.
• Valid Washington State driver’s license with good driving record.
• Special requirements include tobacco-use prohibition and successful background checks.

Responsibilities

• Process complaints and conduct field investigations and inspections.
• Document violations with records, photos, and reports; issue notices as needed.
• Communicate findings and provide guidance to property owners to achieve compliance.
• Coordinate with City Attorney and other departments on challenging cases and dispositions.
• Educate residents and businesses about codes, policies, and procedures.
