Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads operates a welcoming café environment where team members deliver friendly service, prepare food and beverages, and ensure cleanliness and safety for members and teen participants in the workforce development program.

As a Café Attendant, you will model professionalism, support teens learning basic job skills, follow food safety guidelines, and collaborate with staff to maintain a positive, inclusive atmosphere in the café and throughout the facility.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Experience in food service, hospitality, or customer service preferred.
• ServSafe or Food Manager Certification (or willingness to obtain).
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire, provided by the YMCA.
• Completes all pre-employment requirements, including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing, and writing skills for interacting with teens and community members.
• Ability to build positive, authentic relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and serve food and beverages according to café standards.
• Operate the POS system and process cash and card transactions.
• Assist with opening and closing procedures as assigned.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the café workspace, equipment, and dining areas.
• Restock supplies, food items, and beverages as needed.
• Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines at all times.
• Provide friendly and welcoming service to YMCA members and guests.
• Answer questions about menu items and café offerings.
• Address customer concerns or refer issues to leadership when necessary.
• Promote a positive and inclusive environment for all visitors.
• Assist in supporting teens participating in café operations.
• Model positive workplace behaviors such as teamwork, communication, and responsibility.
• Encourage teens as they learn basic job skills and customer service practices.
• Help create a safe and supportive environment where teens feel welcomed and valued.
• Follow YMCA safety policies and procedures.
