The NYC Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Community Associate to support employee engagement initiatives. This role involves data collection, report preparation, and fostering relationships to enhance community participation in Bureau programs. Candidates should have a high school diploma and relevant experience.
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed extending 125 miles north and west of the City.
New York City maintains approximately 140,000 catch basins, 114,000 hydrants, 90,000 valves, 14 gatehouses, 3 reservoirs, 68 groundwater wells, a 100-million-gallon underground storage tank, and 7,000 miles of sanitary sewers and water mains. The Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) oversees the operation, maintenance, and protection of these systems, as well as the protection of waterways and the development of the Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. The Bureau also inspects water and sewer connections by licensed plumbers or authorized contractors and monitors construction projects impacting water or sewer systems.
The selected candidate, reporting under general supervision, will work within the Division of Management Services, Employee Engagement Unit. Responsibilities include distributing and encouraging participation in surveys, collecting and reviewing data, providing improvement suggestions, preparing reports, maintaining records, coordinating meetings and engagement activities, attending college career events, and building relationships to promote the Bureau’s programs.

Residency within New York City is generally required within 90 days of appointment. Certain City employees with two years of continuous employment may reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. Confirm residency requirements during the interview process.
