Job description

Position: Community Associate - 56057

The Tort Division of the Law Department collaborates with development staff, residents, and third parties to identify, investigate, and resolve Tort Claims against the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), aiming to minimize disposition costs.

The role involves coordinating the cost-effective resolution of relevant matters by gathering information and serving as a contact point for impacted individuals. Work varies in difficulty and responsibility and is performed under supervision by legal staff and attorneys. Responsibilities include:

  1. Developing and implementing engagement and communication strategies with development staff, NYCHA residents, and other impacted parties regarding Tort Claims.
  2. Overseeing communication between NYCHA staff, residents, and the Law Department to support efficient claim disposition.
  3. Preparing planning and strategy documents for funding and contractual engagement of outside counsel, investigators, and vendors.
  4. Creating evaluation reports, analyzing data, and reviewing program plans, funding, and performance within the Tort division.
  5. Providing authoritative interpretations of complex issues.
  6. Entering data accurately into designated systems from various sources.
  7. Verifying data accuracy and consistency, checking for errors and duplicates.
  8. Recommending policies and procedures to improve division efficiency.
  9. Performing other clerical operations, including Kronos management.
Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent plus three years of community work or related activities, or
2. Equivalent education and/or experience.

Preferred Skills
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and data entry skills, along with strong interpersonal skills for regular interaction with NYCHA staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Additional Information

NYCHA employees applying for transfers, promotions, or level changes must have served at their current location and in their current title and level for at least one year. NYCHA encourages residents to apply. Benefits include medical plans, deferred compensation, and a pension through NYCERS.
