Job summary

Jobtailor seeks a Youth Advocacy and Leadership Coordinator to provide foundational resources for youth-led advocacy, build chapter capacity, and supervise programs with trauma-informed approaches. You will expand chapters across California, coordinate fundraising and outreach, train volunteers, analyze program data, and engage stakeholders to advance policy goals for foster youth.

The role requires frequent travel within the region, strong communication, and ability to translate complex policy

Qualifications

• Eligible candidates must currently reside in, near, or be willing to relocate to Del Norte, Shasta, Humboldt, or Trinity County, California
• Minimum requirement: Associate’s degree or equivalent from an accredited two-year college
• At least three years’ experience working directly with youth and adult volunteers
• Experience with foster care issues, community organizing, state legislation and policy, and government agencies
• Experience and understanding of the K-12 school system and Child Welfare/Juvenile Justice systems related to youth from foster care
• Valid driver’s license and reliable insured vehicle; willingness to travel within region and occasionally beyond

Job description

• Provide foundational resources for youth-led advocacy and leadership development in county-based chapters
• Build and expand membership bases and volunteer participation
• Develop organizing strategies for assigned chapters in collaboration with members
• Assist with fundraising and support chapter meetings and engagement
• Facilitate community outreach and advocacy efforts
• Develop and facilitate leadership curriculum and training
• Supervise members and oversee programs, projects, and committees through trauma-informed, positive youth development, and healing-centered approaches
• Guide members in identifying local foster-care policy and practice challenges and developing systems-transformation goals and strategies
• Increase youth engagement and member participation
• Support chapter training, fundraising, outreach, and engagement goals
• Visit each chapter at least monthly and provide support, training, and preparation for advocacy meetings
• Prepare members for statewide policy and leadership opportunities, including public hearings, presentations, workshops, committees, and projects
• Coordinate and transport youth to regional and statewide events as needed
• Recruit and train supporters for new and rebuilding chapters
• Provide mediation and conflict-resolution support
• Support curriculum development, T4T, conferences, and trainer development
• Build relationships with county-level decision-makers and participate in community meetings related to CYC’s policy agenda
• Develop outreach and communication strategies to build and maintain chapter bases
• Engage members in stakeholder meetings, including quarterly CDSS director meetings
• Represent CYC at community events and expand organizational visibility
• Partner with program staff to share resources, best practices, and local chapter work across the state
• Recruit, interview, train, schedule, direct, evaluate, and supervise members and supporters
• Supervise and support chapter chairs
• Track participation and update databases with attendance information
• Prepare program and expense reports
• Assist with operational policies and procedures

Requirements

• Associate’s degree, or equivalent from an accredited two-year college
• At least three years’ experience working directly with youth and adult volunteers
• Experience with foster care issues, community organizing, state legislation and policy, and government agencies
• Experience and understanding of the K-12 school system and Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice systems as they relate to youth from foster care
• Current driver’s license, at least three years of driving experience, and a good driving record
• Reliable insured vehicle required
• Ability to build and oversee campaigns, programs, projects, and committees and supervise members
• Ability to motivate and train members
• Ability to plan, organize, assign, direct, review, and evaluate members and supporters
• Ability to facilitate groups and training and present information effectively to youth, volunteers, staff, and community stakeholders
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret state and local legislation and communicate complicated policies and ideas in a youth-friendly format
• Proficient knowledge of Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Systems
• Excellent time management and prioritization skills
• Excellent interpersonal, judgment, and decision-making skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day oversight
• Ability to demonstrate clear boundaries when working with young adults and stakeholders
• Practical knowledge and understanding of restorative justice practices
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently within the assigned region and occasionally throughout California and other locations, including overnight travel
• Ability to drive long distances occasionally
• Ability to attend conferences, events, and meetings involving multiple-day and overnight stays
• Proficiency with personal computers and office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, Google calendaring, email, and data management
• Love for working with teenagers and young adults
