Job summary

M.C. Dean is seeking a Telecom Technician 3 to oversee the installation and testing of communications cabling and equipment. You will plan, organize, and schedule work orders, ensuring high‑quality installations and safety compliance.

You will supervise a crew of technicians and apprentices, coordinate with design reviews, and maintain documentation. The role requires 6+ years in commercial communications, high school diploma or GED, and the ability to read plans.

Telecom Technician 3

A Telecom Technician 3 is responsible for the installation, planning, organizing and scheduling of communications cabling and equipment to complete assigned work orders, including assigning tasks, ensuring high‑quality installation and performing quality inspections. The role monitors task completion, compliance and prevents safety issues in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Oversees a crew of five (5) or more technicians and apprentices.

Technical requirements include installation of equipment using hand tools and power tools, a working understanding of telecom systems, blueprints and knowledge of codes and standards. Technicians must pursue qualification as a BICSI Technician. Telecom technicians are full‑time employees with company benefits.

Responsibilities
  • Knowledge of safe use of hand tools and various power tools.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow safety policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in daily safety and work briefings.
  • Install various types of low‑voltage cable.
  • Install, inspect, terminate, test, and troubleshoot ISP/OSP telecommunications systems (fiber optics, Category 5, 6, 6A, and associated equipment such as pathways, cable trays, cabinets, racks, telecommunications devices, prefabricated components, assemblies, and grounding systems).
  • Survey and document existing telecommunications infrastructure such as copper and fiber cables, active and passive components using electronic devices.
  • Sketch rack elevations, floor and wall elevations.
  • Participate in design document reviews and activities to ensure timely, cost‑effective, and quality project outcomes.
  • Install, power up and connect fiber uplinks of network equipment into a telecommunications cabinet/rack.
  • Calculate grounding conductor, conduit sizing and raceway layouts.
  • Produce 4‑week look‑ahead plans including productivity planning for assigned scopes of work, material procurement/staging and tracking weekly productivity to plans.
  • Train and supervise apprentices in a team environment, installing cable from telecommunication rooms (TR) to work area outlets (WAO) while following drawings and run lists to ensure methodical installation and proper bundling.
  • Maintain accurate as‑built drawings and log them onto master record contract drawings at least once a week.
  • Perform quality assurance checks of the team’s work to ensure cable installation meets all applicable requirements.
  • Maintain a clean work area and participate in job‑site cleanup.
  • Secure company tools and materials daily.
  • Travel may be required up to 25%.

Qualifications
  • 6+ years of prior experience in the commercial communications industry.
  • 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Excellent safety record, valid driver’s license and clean driving record required for company‑owned vehicle use.
  • Successfully pass a background check and drug test.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the job site.
  • Ability to pass basic telecommunication knowledge test.
  • Demonstrated experience and the ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Strong communication, time‑management and organization skills to meet deadlines and quality objectives.
  • Consistently report to work on time, work well with others to accomplish a common goal and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Wear long pants and a shirt that covers the shoulders by six (6) inches. These are not provided by the company.
  • Provide basic tools from the provided tool list prior to day one of employment.
Abilities
  • Lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Demonstrate physical strength and stamina for loading, unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in material transportation. Follow proper lifting techniques and safety protocols.
  • Relocate a 12‑foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Work at heights up to 60 feet, clamp and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all ladder types.
  • Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull and reach overhead routinely.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected), ability to see in color, and ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • Use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Recognize potential problems but not required to solve them.
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce reasonable answers.
  • Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions.
  • See details at close range (within a few feet).
  • Listen and understand information and ideas presented verbally.
Desired Skills
  • BICSI credentials including Technician Manufacture Certifications and/or Fiber Certification.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Pay Range

USD $30.00 - USD $35.00 /hr.
