Job Overview
A Communications Technician 2 is responsible for the installation and assisting with planning & layout of communications cabling and equipment in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. As a technician, you should have work experience installing basic equipment, involving the use of hand tools and power tools, a basic understanding of telecom systems, blueprints, and knowledge of codes and standards. Additionally, each technician must strive to become a qualified BICSI Technician. Telecom technicians are full-time employees with company benefits.
Job Requirements
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Knowledge and safe use of hand tools and various power tools
- Wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Following safety policies and procedures
- Actively participating in daily safety and work briefings
- Installation of various types of low voltage cable
- Installation, inspection, terminating, testing, troubleshooting of ISP/OSP telecommunications systems (Fiber Optics, Category 5, 6, 6A, and associated equipment such as:
- Various pathways and cable trays
- Various cabinets and racks
- Telecommunications devices
- Prefabricated components and assemblies
- Telecommunications grounding systems
Survey and document existing telecommunications infrastructure such as copper and fiber cables, active and passive components using electronic devicesSketch rack elevations, floor, and wall elevationsTrain and supervise apprentices in a team environment to facilitate cable installation from Telecommunication Rooms (TR) to work area outlets (WAO), following drawings and run lists to ensure proper installation and organizationPerform quality assurance checks of team’s work to ensure compliance with requirementsMaintain a clean work area and participate in job site cleanupSecure company tools and materials dailyUp to 25% travel, which may include domestic and/or international travelQualifications / Skills Sets / Expectations:
- 4+ years prior experience in the commercial communications industry
- Be 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED required
- Excellent safety record, valid driver’s license, and clean driving record to meet corporate eligibility requirements for driving a company vehicle
- Successfully pass a background check and drug test
- Reliable transportation to and from the jobsite
- Ability to pass a basic telecommunication knowledge test
- Experience and ability to read and understand plans and specifications
- Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills
- Punctuality and teamwork skills to maintain a safe work environment
- Wear long pants and a shirt that covers the shoulders (not provided by the company)
- Provide basic tools from the provided list before the first day of employment
Physical Abilities:
- Lift at least 100 pounds at one time and 60 pounds for extended periods
- Relocate up to a twelve-foot stepladder without assistance
- Work at various heights, climbing and maintaining balance on scaffolds, lifts, catwalks, and ladders
- Perform routine movements such as walking, climbing, lifting, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead
- Good vision (may be corrected), ability to distinguish colors, and communicate effectively in English
- Use standard ladders safely while carrying tools

- Understand spoken information and ideas
- Apply rules to specific problems and recognize issues before they occur
- Combine information to form conclusions, including relating seemingly unrelated events
Desired Skills:
- Active security clearance
- Valid passport and willingness to travel overseas
- BICSI credentials, including Technician
- Manufacture certifications and/or fiber certification
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications
