Role Overview:

The Communications Specialist supports internal and external communication initiatives, ensuring clear, consistent, and engaging messaging across various channels. The Communication Specialist collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop content, manage communication strategies, and enhance brand presence. The Communication Specialist creates clear, accessible, and inclusive communication materials for a diverse membership base, including individuals with limited health literacy and English proficiency.

Work Arrangement:

Remote with travel to the Southfield, Michigan office for team meetings as needed

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in developing, writing, editing, and distributing print and electronic member communications, policy documents, website content, and educational materials using plain language principles, ensuring alignment with company values and regulatory guidelines. Uses visual aids, infographics, and culturally appropriate imagery to enhance understanding.
  • Complies with industry standards and corporate communication policies. Applies knowledge of federal and state regulations such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Section 1557 (non-discrimination in healthcare), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements in the creation of communication materials.
  • Understands contractual requirements and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) standards to ensure all member communications are compliant.
  • Assists with cultural reviews of materials to ensure messaging is relevant and resonates with diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Stays informed about industry trends and best practices in inclusive communications and regulatory requirements.
  • Supports the implementation of internal and external communication strategies for company initiatives, programs, and campaigns.
  • Effectively collaborates with internal legal, compliance, marketing, and customer support services teams to align messaging with corporate and inclusivity goals.


Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Professional Writing, Communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of Two (2) to Four (4) years of experience in a managed care, healthcare, or mission-based organization preferred
  • Familiarity with AP Style or other publishing and journalistic guidelines


Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of multiple projects while being able to meet demands and timelines.
  • Must posses strong writing and editing skills
