Job summary

SEIU Healthcare Michigan (HCMI) in Detroit seeks a Communications Specialist to lead compelling campaigns, coordinate media outreach, and amplify the Union’s impact among members, leaders, and the public.

You will draft materials for organizing, bargaining, political advocacy, produce photo and video content, publish on social media, update WordPress sites, and support events. Strong communication, project management, and proficiency with Canva and social platforms are essential.

Qualifications

  • At least two years’ experience in communications, public relations, or a similar field.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, G-Suite, Canva, WordPress, and major social media platforms.
  • Experience with communications/media relations/public relations, especially regarding organizing, advocacy, and political campaigns.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects of varying timelines and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Draft communications tools for campaigns across the union, including organizing, bargaining, political advocacy, and others.
  • Coordinate communications with the media, general public, and other Union stakeholders.
  • Execute the creation of leaflets, background pieces, press kit materials, fact sheets, etc.
  • Capture and produce photo and video content for campaigns, events, social media, and other communications needs.
  • Create and publish content on social media platforms.
  • Draft talking points, statements, letters to the editor, copy for flyers, speeches, advertisements, and other communications materials.
  • Update and edit website content using WordPress or similar CMS.
  • Support special events, including prepping members and spokespeople.
  • Perform other related duties as required by the Union.

Job description

SEIU Healthcare Michigan (HCMI) is a dynamic labor union and the largest healthcare worker union in the state, representing over 50,000 long-term care and hospital workers. About the position

The Detroit area-based Communications Specialist is responsible for execution of compelling communications strategies for HCMI. This person will play an important role in amplifying HCMI’s impact by coordinating communications with the media, the general public, and other Union stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities
  • Draft communications tools for various campaigns across the union, including organizing, bargaining, political advocacy, and others.
  • Work with direct supervisor and Union leadership to implement strategies that will enhance the Union’s visibility and public image.
  • Execute the creation of high-quality leaflets, background pieces, press kit materials, fact sheets, etc. for campaigns and other needs.
  • Capture and produce photo and video content for campaigns, events, social media, and other communications needs.
  • Create and publish content on social media platforms.
  • Draft talking points, statements, letters to the editor, copy for flyers, speeches, advertisements, and other communications materials.
  • Update and edit website content using WordPress or similar content management systems.
  • Support special events, including prepping members and spokespeople.
  • Perform other related duties as required by the Union.
What are we looking for?
  • At least two years’ experience in communications, public relations, or a similar field.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, G-Suite, Canva, WordPress, and major social media platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of electronic and print media systems.
  • Experience with communications/media relations/public relations, especially regarding organizing, advocacy, and political campaigns.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects of varying timelines and resources.
  • Motivated self-starter who can take initiative, work independently and be an enthusiastic team player.
  • Ability to work with elected leaders, members, and others in complex situations.
  • Experience in the labor movement, organizing, or political campaigns is a plus.
  • Strong commitment to social and economic justice.
Salary

$60,000 –$65,000 based on experience

The position is a full-time position that occasionally requires long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
