POSITION DETAILS

The Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) works in partnership with the College?s academic and administrative offices to promote Kingsborough Community College?s unique mission and transformative role as an engine of social mobility. The office manages all aspects of public relations, advertising and marketing, social media, creative and graphic design, and photography and video production services to effectively communicate with the college community and to tell the story of our nationally ranked institution.

The Communications Publications Editorial Manager reports directly to the Vice President for Communications and Marketing and plays a crucial role in the Office of Communications and Marketing at the College. This position is responsible for securing earned media coverage for the College across local, regional, and national media outlets, including Spanish-language and other ethnic publications, as well as hyperlocal media, with the goal of enhancing the organization?s visibility, credibility, and reputation in the media landscape.

They will research, report, write, review, edit, and produce informative content for various communications, including press releases, media advisories, op-eds, talking points, letters, remarks, quotes, crisis communications and statements from senior College administrators. This also includes digital newsletters and other materials for both internal and external audiences. In addition to preparing these deliverables, they will manage inquiries from media outlets, formulate and pitch stories, monitor news outlets and social media, gather clips, and provide metrics on earned media. They will also plan and manage press events, maintain press contacts, and create media lists. Furthermore, they will organize, plan, and execute all projects while effectively managing and meeting all deadlines .Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

Position Details:

  1. Create and maintain a comprehensive media contact list that includes relevant media outlets, journalists, and influencers tailored to the College?s target audiences.
  2. Collaborate with internal teams to develop compelling story angles that align with the College?s goals and resonate with our audience.
  3. Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, and one-pagers that include relevant insights, data, key messages, and narratives about the College.
  4. Pitch story ideas to journalists and editors through personalized emails, phone calls, or social media outreach.
  5. Respond to media inquiries and draft press statements in collaboration with the VP for Communications and Marketing, as well as CUNY?s Communications and Marketing team.
  6. Organize and coordinate press conferences, media briefings, and other events to engage with journalists.
  7. Prepare College spokespeople for media interactions, including interviews, panel discussions, and public speaking engagements.
  8. Monitor media coverage, track mentions, and prepare monthly reports on the results of earned media efforts.
  9. Develop strategies and communication templates for managing crises.
  10. Leverage social media channels to amplify earned media coverage and engage with audiences. Monitor social media conversations about the organization and respond appropriately.
  11. Work closely with members of the Communications and Marketing team to ensure consistent messaging across all channels.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while producing high-quality editorial content across multiple platforms. Skilled in repackaging content for various distributions to maximize impact.
  2. Strong skills in collaboration, critical thinking, change management, communication, creativity, and problem-solving.
  3. Experience as a successful writer in fields such as public relations, journalism, academia, or other related areas. Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  4. Solid relationship-building abilities to value diverse perspectives and effectively engage with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  5. Thorough understanding of writing fundamentals, including grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation, alongside knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication standards (e.g., AP Style Guide).
  6. Capable of writing quickly, persuasively, and clearly on topics related to public universities and higher education.
  7. Strong sense of editorial integrity and professional credibility necessary for handling sensitive assignments discreetly, exercising sound judgment, and managing confidential information.
  8. Excellent research and analytical skills, along with the capacity to understand complex issues and simplify them for diverse audiences, while paying careful attention to factual details.
  9. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, accept direction, and work both independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality work and meet deadlines.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Oversees implementation of communications programs and produces communications in all media to meet a variety of College needs

  • Provides creative direction for publications and marketing materials, such as catalogs, annual reports, brochures, direct mail packages, print advertising and other marketing materials
  • Works with College clientele (faculty, administrators, and student representatives) to understand their communications objectives, select appropriate messages, formats, and distribution methods, set production timelines, and establish appropriate editorial and design approaches
  • Provides creative direction and supervision to external and/or internal creative resources such as writers, photographers, illustrators and graphic designers
  • Ensures consistent application of standards and guidelines for College materials, such as graphic identity standards
  • Manages production activities, including creating printing specifications and arranging procurement of services, managing work flows, and production schedules, and assuring a quality finished product
  • Prepares sensitive and high-priority communications such as speeches for use by senior management
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$82,982 - $90,375

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
