9-1-1 EMERGENCY DISPATCHER - COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER
Becoming a Communications Officer is a rewarding and challenging career. Communications Officers must be able to multi-task, react quickly, efficiently, and calmly in emergency and routine situations. Responsibilities include answering, prioritizing, and dispatching emergency and routine calls for law enforcement, fire, and medical services, operating a two-way radio, and utilizing a computer-aided dispatch system. Communications Officers MUST be able to work shift work, including twelve-hour shifts, nights, holidays, and weekends. They must also be prepared to work during civil unrest and natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornados.

Full-time positions are on a rotating schedule, 12-hour shifts. There are no permanent shifts. All communications officers will rotate between day and evening shifts every 3 months after being placed on a shift. These positions will work weekends, holidays, and nights, and are also required to work during civil unrest and natural disasters.
All applications are reviewed by the Office of Professional Standards. Applicants will be notified by email if disqualified; all other applicants will be called to take a computerized skills test to determine eligibility. Applicants must obtain a minimum score of 70%. The process is lengthy; applicants will be notified by phone when the tests are being conducted and when interviews are scheduled. Applicants must check their email frequently.
