Job summary

Safe Haven Ministries, a Grand Rapids nonprofit, seeks a Communications Manager to lead strategy for organizational and donor communications, including social media, website content, events, and collateral. The role works within the development team and coordinates with volunteers and vendors.

The ideal candidate has a BA in communications or related field, 3–6 years of multi-channel experience, strong writing, project management, and brand-aligned messaging across platforms.

  • Develop, manage and execute the agency’s annual communication plan, including website, newsletters, email communication, brochures, event collateral, sponsorship packages, annual report, and social media.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Advancement to implement updated messaging or communications strategies.
  • Manage annual appeals processes, utilizing communications strategies to reach annual fundraising goals.
  • Identify opportunities for trauma-informed storytelling reflecting the mission across Safe Haven teams.

Hours & Status: Full-time, exempt; 8am-5pm with some flexibility and occasional evenings/weekends

POSITION DESCRIPTION :

The Communications Manager holds a key function in helping communicate Safe Haven Ministries’ vision, commitment, and mission with our community and team members. In this role, the Communications Manager will set and lead the strategy for all organizational and donor communications. This includes creating and supporting social media and website content, event communications and writing and producing engaging collateral. The role will work within the development team and receive support from volunteers and vendors as needed.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Safe Haven Ministries – a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan – believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking and preventing domestic violence and exploitation in our community. Safe Haven offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services; confidential emergency shelter for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence and human trafficking; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Communication Management and Branding
  • Responsible for managing and driving the implementation of an effective outreach and communication campaign to educate and cultivate diverse community support
  • Coordinate website communication with contracted vendor.
  • Develop, manage and execute the agency’s annual communication plan, including, but not limited to, agency website, newsletters, email communication, brochures, event collateral, sponsorship packages, annual report, and social media
  • Collaborate with the Director of Advancement to implement updated messaging or communications strategies.
  • Manage annual appeals processes, utilizing communications strategies to reach annual fundraising goals
  • Identify opportunities for trauma-informed story-telling that reflects the mission, vision and values of Safe Haven by coordinating across all Safe Haven teams
  • Develop and nurture relationships with local media
  • Provide communication materials, social posts, and reports to Leadership and other teams within the organization
Content Creation
  • Develop and implement engaging social media campaigns for a variety of Safe Haven Ministries programs and events to advance and grow engagement around programming, events, fundraising, and messaging goals.
  • Manage website and socials ensuring accurate, timely, and data-driven engagement with a focus on audience growth
  • Create and distribute press releases and support crisis communications for the organization
Asset Oversight
  • Coordinate with Director of Advancement for photography and videography (stock, project, social media, program, event coverage, etc.) and make plans for capturing with internal team
  • Manage in-house design needs; by creating presentations, flyers and postcards, event collateral, graphics, etc., and supporting colleagues with brand application and logo use understanding survivor centered commitment
  • Organize print and digital assets (i.e. newsletters, brochures, photography, video) and connect colleagues and community to needed resources.
  • Coordinate and manage when there is a need for vendors and event volunteers
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED OR PREFERRED
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field
  • 3-6 years of experience managing and executing across multi-channel communication strategies
  • High level of project management, strategic goal setting and execution in annual communication campaign and events
  • Creative and proactive problem solver
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to connect with a diverse group of people
  • High proficiency in computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office 365, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Raiser’s Edge and project management software.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and desire to maximize efficiency in the role
  • Experience in creating and implementing brand-aligned messaging for different audiences and channels.
  • Proficiency with various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn.
  • Cultural competency and emotional intelligence to work with individuals from varied backgrounds and foster open communication among diverse stakeholders creating a caring and safe environment
  • Ability to work independently and with initiative while regularly collaborating with and across teams.
