Job description

The Crowd is working with a top-tier design practice, renowned for shaping places, communities, and the public realm. The firm is seeking a Communications Director to strengthen its profile, bring its work and ideas to wider audiences, and connect teams across its studios. This full-time position offers some hybrid flexibility, with some regular studio attendance required. Candidates must be based in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, or Dallas.

The ideal candidate will be a creative and strategic communications leader with excellent storytelling skills, people management experience, and preferably a background in landscape architecture, urban design, or planning. Working closely with senior leadership and local marketing teams, you'll translate complex design thinking into compelling content, build meaningful media relationships, and create a cohesive voice across internal and external communications.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys setting direction while remaining actively involved in writing, content development, and delivery. Our client offers excellent benefits including employee stock contributions, profit sharing, a 401(k), health coverage, and more.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver a communications strategy that strengthens the firm's reputation, supports business goals, and brings its projects, research, and people into the spotlight.
  • Build relationships with relevant media and industry platforms, securing coverage, editorial opportunities, speaking engagements, and events while advising leadership on sensitive communications.
  • Guide the creation of engaging digital, social, video, and print content, maintaining consistent messaging and providing writing and editorial support to senior leaders.
  • Strengthen communication between studios through leadership updates and employee engagement initiatives, while mentoring marketing staff and coordinating creative contributors.
  • Partner with leadership on communications budgets and resources, track campaign performance, and refine channels and messaging to improve reach and engagement.
Key Skills/Requirements:
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in communications, PR, or marketing, preferably within landscape architecture, urban design, planning, or a closely related design discipline.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to make complex projects and ideas accessible and compelling to different audiences.
  • Proven success securing media coverage, developing integrated communications campaigns, and handling sensitive or crisis communications.
  • People management experience and a collaborative leadership style – experience coordinating teams across multiple offices and time zones is advantageous.
  • Strong organizational skills, familiarity with digital publishing, social media, SEO, and CRM tools, and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
