Job Description
The Pacific Seabird Group (PSG) is seeking a Communications Coordinator to help support our year-round activities on behalf of seabirds and their habitats. In this newly created role, the Communications Coordinator will work with a team of dedicated volunteers to enhance PSG’s internal and external communications and fundraising efforts.
This position will help PSG increase its capacity to manage its annual meeting, pursue funding opportunities, and develop virtual programming. Ultimately, the Communications Coordinator will play a key role in helping PSG fulfill its mission of increasing the quality and quantity of seabird research in the Pacific and beyond by facilitating the exchange of information.
Scope of work
Primary responsibilities include:
- Annual Meeting Communications (60%)
- Manage communications related to PSG’s annual meeting (typically held in February of each year). Meetings may be held either in-person or virtually and may be held jointly with other professional societies.
- Represent the Communications Committee on Local Committee meetings and other organisational meetings (e.g., coordinating calls with other societies) as needed.
- Develop and update meeting website and content, including facilitating translation of materials.
- Distribute important information and deadlines to PSG members and the public.
- Compile meeting programs and related materials.
- Serve as a liaison between meeting attendees and organisers.
- Fundraising Support (15%)
- Collaborate with the PSG Treasurer and Finance Manager to curate materials that can be used in fundraising and grant applications to support the annual meeting and year-round activities.
- Assist with identifying potential grant opportunities.
- Virtual Programming Support (10%)
- Provide logistical support to help PSG members organize virtual workshops, seminars, and meetings to improve year-round engagement.
- Communications Committee Participation (5%)
- Attend regular meetings of the Communications Committee.
- Communications Strategy & Branding (5%)
- Work with the Communications Committee co-chairs to review and develop PSG’s communications strategy and branding materials.
- Social Media Coordination (5%)
- Coordinate with social media volunteers to develop and promote content, particularly around annual meetings and other PSG events.
While the duties are expected to vary throughout the year according to project needs, it is anticipated this is a part-time role. Additional duties may include assisting with other PSG projects and other administrative duties as requested.
Role Requirements
Education
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a business, communications, marketing, biological or natural resources related field.
Experience
At least two years of experience in communications and/or project management.
Skill requirements
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Familiarity with communications strategy development and implementation.
- Familiarity with developing accessible communications materials for a variety of audiences including non-native English speakers.
- Experience developing websites and using various social media platforms.
- Excellent writing and editing skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Creative thinking, organisational skills, and proven ability to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems.
- Ability to learn new software independently.
- Graphic design skills and video/multimedia production (preferred).
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress (preferred).
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with seabird biology and conservation.
- Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
- Experience working with non-profit organisations.
Other information
Candidates must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and have a working knowledge of marketing, ideally within the non-profit sector.
This is a remote position and is open to applicants from all regions (including internationally). The successful candidate will work closely with our Communications Committee and will report to the Communications Committee Co-chairs and the PSG Treasurer.
