Job description

As one of the most enduring civil rights institutions on the West Coast, LCCRSF works to dismantle systems of oppression and racism and to build an equitable and just society. Formed in 1968 to bridge the legal community and the Civil Rights Movement, we’re known for groundbreaking legal victories like integrating SF Unified School District, requiring the SF Fire Department to hire women and people of color, ending the suspension of drivers’ licenses for failure to pay court debts, eliminating illegal fines and fees imposed by courts for profit, and liberating hundreds of people from ICE detention facilities in California during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also leverage a broad network of pro bono volunteers to advance our work by harnessing the resources of the private bar.

At LCCRSF, we take an integrated advocacy approach, meaning we build campaigns that combine direct services, impact litigation, and political advocacy to protect and promote civil rights. Our work seeks to build power for communities of color, low-income people, immigrants, and refugees in the Bay Area and throughout California.

Our goal is to make this work sustainable, to take care of each other and our communities, and to rest so we can be fierce in the face of power through our core issue areas of Racial Justice, Immigrant Justice, and Economic Justice. Learn more at our website. (https://lccrsf.org/)

ABOUT THE POSITION

Communications Strategy (20%)

You will work with the Communications Manager in creating and putting into action a yearly communications plan with strategic messaging to connect well with important audiences. This includes ensuring goals are updated in quarterly or yearly communication plan documents, analyzing and prioritizing communications opportunities, and co-developing a social media strategy with clear objectives for content and audience guidelines for each platform.

Content Development and Distribution (50%)

In coordination with the Communications Manager, you will help shape and distribute crucial organizational messages to advance goals related to racial justice, immigrant rights, and economic justice. This will involve drafting language and graphics for toolkits, social media, email campaigns, and preparing staff for media interactions. You will also collaborate on generating OpEd content, talking points, and sound bites. Your role includes coordinating with program staff, conducting research for program campaigns, and sharing messages across various platforms. You will also play a role in maintaining the LCCRSF website, updating pages, and expanding outreach, as well as responding to staff requests for website content editing and bi-annual litigation case page updates.

In addition, you will contribute to web-based donor and e-news campaigns, crafting monthly newsletters, board updates, media roundups, ad hoc campaigns, and year-end donation messages. Assisting in event-related tasks, you’ll help create materials for special events like the MLK Awards Dinner and Member events, producing content for the MLK social media calendar, and collaborating on the creation of highlight videos. Finally, your responsibilities extend to logistical support for the annual member meeting, including digital invitations and agenda materials, and other administrative tasks as appropriate.

Communications Administrative Support (30%):

In collaboration with the Communications Manager, your role also involves overseeing media tracking, outreach efforts, press releases, op-eds, and statements across local, state, and national media within specified timeframes. You’ll contribute by creating a press list for targeted campaign outreach, researching suitable press contacts, and managing the [emailprotected] email list while assisting in handling incoming requests. Ensuring the accuracy and expansion of media lists, tracking LCCRSF press coverage, and collecting media mentions for bi-monthly board meetings are essential. Tasks also include organizing and updating Mailchimp with key audience data, monitoring performance, and troubleshooting any issues, as well as maintaining meticulous records and inputting communication and development data into Salesforce. Additionally, you’ll assist in managing limited print mailings and provide support for various administrative tasks as needed.
