Qualifications

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of External Affairs and Government Relations, this position supports MCCH's communications and public relations strategy by managing the organization's social media presence, website content, digital storytelling, photography, videography, email communications, and brand consistency across all communication platforms.

Description

The Communications and Digital Media Specialist is responsible for creating engaging digital content that elevates Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless' mission, programs, advocacy initiatives, community partnerships, and organizational impact. Reporting to the Director of External Affairs and Government Relations, this position supports MCCH's communications and public relations strategy by managing the organization's social media presence, website content, digital storytelling, photography, videography, email communications, and brand consistency across all communication platforms.

The Specialist plays a key role in promoting MCCH's programs, government and community partnerships, advocacy initiatives, fundraising campaigns, and organizational accomplishments by creating compelling content that increases public awareness, strengthens community engagement, supports philanthropic efforts, and reinforces MCCH's position as a leader in ending homelessness.

This position requires a creative storyteller who enjoys working throughout the organization, building relationships with staff, clients, volunteers, donors, and community partners while producing engaging multimedia content across multiple digital platforms.

Social Media Management (35%)

Goal: Expand MCCH's digital presence and increase public engagement through mission-driven content that supports communications, advocacy, fundraising, and community awareness.

  • Develop, schedule, and publish engaging content across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and emerging social media platforms.
  • Maintain a monthly social media content calendar aligned with organizational priorities, advocacy initiatives, fundraising campaigns, community events, and public awareness efforts.
  • Monitor engagement, respond to comments and messages as appropriate, and elevate sensitive inquiries to the Director of External Affairs and Government Relations.
  • Track social media analytics and prepare regular performance reports with recommendations to increase audience growth and engagement.
  • Stay current on digital marketing trends, platform updates, and nonprofit communication best practices.
Digital Storytelling, Photography & Video Production (30%)

Goal: Capture and share authentic stories that demonstrate the impact of MCCH's mission and strategic priorities.

  • Photograph programs, housing communities, events, volunteers, staff, donors, elected officials, and community partners.
  • Produce and edit short- and long-form videos for fundraising campaigns, advocacy initiatives, recruitment, public awareness, and organizational communications.
  • Conduct interviews with staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and, when appropriate, clients to develop compelling stories.
  • Create visual content that highlights client success, housing outcomes, advocacy efforts, volunteer engagement, donor impact, and community partnerships while maintaining confidentiality and dignity.
  • Organize and maintain MCCH's digital photo, video, and multimedia library.
Website, Digital Communications & Public Relations Support (20%)

Goal: Maintain an engaging, current, and consistent digital presence that supports MCCH's communications strategy.

  • Update website content, including news releases, advocacy updates, events, staff information, program highlights, and organizational announcements.
  • Assist in developing email newsletters, digital fundraising communications, advocacy alerts, and organizational announcements.
  • Ensure website content remains accurate, accessible, current, and consistent with MCCH's brand standards.
  • Optimize digital content for accessibility and search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Support media relations efforts by preparing digital assets, photography, background materials, and communications resources as assigned.
  • Assist with online fundraising campaigns, advocacy initiatives, and public awareness campaigns.
Brand Management & Creative Services (5%)

Goal: Support a strong and consistent organizational brand across all communications.

  • Design graphics for social media, presentations, brochures, flyers, event materials, advocacy campaigns, fundraising initiatives, and organizational communications.
  • Assist with production of annual reports, impact reports, campaign materials, and other marketing collateral.
  • Ensure all visual materials adhere to MCCH's brand standards and communications guidelines.
  • Support the Director of External Affairs, Government Relations & Advocacy in implementing organization-wide branding and communications initiatives.
Organizational Support (10%)
  • Provide management of the MCCH administrative email answering and routing emails to the appropriate staff.
  • Provide communications support for fundraising events, advocacy campaigns, government relations activities, volunteer initiatives, and community outreach events.
  • Provide photography and videography support for Board meetings, donor events, legislative activities, media opportunities, and organizational events.
  • Collaborate with staff across all departments to identify compelling stories and communication opportunities.
  • Support special projects and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of External Affairs and Government Relations.
Requirements
Education

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Digital Media, Journalism, Public Relations, Graphic Design, Multimedia Production, or a related field preferred. Equivalent professional experience may be considered.

Experience
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in communications, social media, digital marketing, multimedia production, public relations, or nonprofit communications.
  • Experience creating content for multiple social media platforms.
  • Experience with photography, videography, and multimedia storytelling.
  • Experience maintaining websites using content management systems.
  • Experience supporting communications, marketing, advocacy, or fundraising initiatives preferred.
  • Nonprofit experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
  • Strong storytelling abilities with an eye for compelling photography, videography, and graphic design.
  • Proficiency with social media management platforms and content scheduling tools.
  • Experience using Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Acrobat, or similar).
  • Experience producing and editing short-form video for Instagram Reels, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other digital platforms.
  • Basic photography and videography skills, including lighting, composition, and audio recording.
  • Experience using website content management systems such as WordPress or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff across all departments and represent the organization professionally.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and portraying clients with dignity and respect.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends for organizational events.
