Job summary

HFA is seeking a Commissioning Specialist II to lead and support commissioning activities for building systems. You will verify performance and ensure systems meet design intent, working with the Commissioning Agent and project teams.

Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of ASHRAE commissioning standards, energy codes, and building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, controls).
  • Experience performing functional performance testing and resolving field issues.
  • Ability to independently manage commissioning tasks, lead meetings, and prepare technical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop commissioning plans, checklists, and functional testing procedures for simple systems.
  • Coordinate and perform functional performance testing on more complex HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and controls systems.
  • Identify system deficiencies and assist in troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Prepare detailed commissioning reports, issues logs, and verification documentation.
  • Lead project meetings representing commissioning interests and communicate findings clearly.
  • Apply codes, standards, and best practices for building commissioning.
  • Support engineers in data collection, issue tracking, and verification of corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Architects, Engineers, and Contractors and foresee issues in documents that may develop into field issues.
  • Ensure QA/QC procedures are followed and that work is reviewed prior to submission to supervisor.

We are currently looking for a Commissioning Specialist II to join our growing team. This position supports and leads commissioning activities for building systems, working closely with the Commissioning Agent and project teams to verify performance and ensure systems meet design intent.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of ASHRAE commissioning standards, energy codes, and building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and controls, along with experience performing functional performance testing and resolving system issues in the field. Candidates should be capable of independently managing commissioning tasks, leading meetings, preparing technical documentation, and contributing to successful project delivery in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Individual should assist the Commissioning Agent / Discipline Lead to deliver commissioning of applicable systems. Individual should be able to lead commissioning activities.
  • Individual will have a good understanding of the commissioning process with regards to ASHRAE Standard 202 and ASHRAE Guideline 0.
  • Individual should have a good understanding of national energy codes and standards (like ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, USGBC) with how it impacts commissioning requirements. Individual should be able to explain requirements to clients and project teams.
  • Individuals should be able to apply knowledge and experience to commissioning more complex mechanical, plumbing and electrical/lighting systems (i.e. VAV or VRF Systems) and able to independently tackle challenges as they arise on projects.
  • Individual should have a good understanding of controls and impacts on system operations.
Job Duties:
  • Develop commissioning plans, checklists, and functional testing procedures for simple systems.

  • Identify system deficiencies and assist in troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Prepare detailed commissioning reports, issues logs, system verification documentation and close-out documents.
  • Lead project meetings, representing commissioning interests, and communicate technical findings clearly.
  • Apply applicable codes, standards, and best practices for building commissioning.
  • Support engineers in data collection, issue tracking, and verification of corrective actions.
  • Work within a collaborative environment with Architects, Engineers, and Contractors. Able to forsee issues in documents that will develop into field issues.
  • Ensure compliance with established company QA/QC procedures. Individual shall perform quality control of their own work prior to giving to supervisor.
Education Requirements: BSME or equivalent construction experience
