Job summary

McKinstry seeks a Commissioning Specialist - Electrical to join our National Technical Services team in Seattle. You will drive commissioning for new and existing facilities, ensuring systems operate as designed and optimizing performance across mechanical, electrical, and building automation domains.

The role requires 3+ years of MEP commissioning experience, strong PLC and networking knowledge, and effective cross-functional collaboration with engineers, vendors, and owners.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of MEP commissioning experience.
  • Strong understanding of building automation systems and PLC-based environments.
  • Experience reviewing construction documents, I/O lists, and network architecture docs.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, BACnet.
  • Ability to troubleshoot startup issues across electrical and PLC systems.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-team coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning activities across mechanical, electrical, controls, and building automation systems.
  • Develop and manage project-specific commissioning, balancing, and startup plans.
  • Review installation, startup, functional performance, and controls to ensure compliance with specs.
  • Support control system design by creating PLC-based drawings and network coordination.
  • Program, integrate, and troubleshoot PLC systems and field devices.
  • Lead FAT/SAT activities and document test scripts and checklists.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers or technicians.

Technical and Consulting Services:

  • Helping clients improve efficiency, reliability, and operating costs on new and existing facilities.
  • Developing, managing, and coordinating project-specific commissioning, balancing, and startup plans.
  • Performing commissioning activities across mechanical, electrical, controls, and building automation systems.
  • Reviewing installation, startup, functional performance, and controls operations to verify compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Supporting controls system design by developing PLC-based control drawings, control panel requirements, instrumentation selections, and network architecture coordination.
  • Programming, integrating, and troubleshooting basic PLC systems, field devices, third-party equipment, and communication networks.
  • Leading or supporting FAT/SAT activities, including I/O verification, point-to-point checks, loop checks, and functional performance testing.
  • Developing and maintaining commissioning documentation such as I/O lists, instrumentation schedules, control drawings, network diagrams, test scripts, and checklists.
  • Providing technical leadership, coordinating with project stakeholders, participating in design reviews, and mentoring junior engineers or technicians.
What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry:
  • 3+ years of MEP commissioning experience, including leading new construction commissioning projects.
  • Proven understanding of building automation systems, controls integration, and PLC-based control environments.
  • Experience reviewing construction documents, controls drawings, I/O lists, instrumentation schedules, and network architecture documentation.
  • Familiarity with PLC hardware, remote I/O, power supplies, network components, instrumentation, and common protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, and BACnet.
  • Ability to troubleshoot startup issues related to PLC programming, instrumentation, electrical systems, mechanical systems, communication networks, and field devices.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Excel, and Word; AutoCAD experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to coordinate across engineers, vendors, contractors, and owners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, architectural, or electrical engineering or equivalent work experience preferred.

The pay range for this position is$37.02 - $52.60 per hour; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
