Job summary

Saronic Technologies is seeking an experienced Captain to lead end‑of‑line testing and commissioning of the Marauder, a mid‑sized autonomous surface vessel. You will ensure safe navigation, oversee onboard crews, and coordinate with onshore teams to execute testing and commissioning plans.

Position Overview:

Saronic is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Captain to conduct the end of line testing and commissioning of our mid‑sized autonomous surface vessel, Marauder. In this critical role, you will ensure the safe and efficient navigation of the vessel, while conducting commissioning tests and builder sea‑trial testing operations in support of cutting‑edge autonomous systems development.

Your responsibilities will include supervising the onboard crew, monitoring vessel performance, managing operational systems, and collaborating closely with onshore teams to achieve mission objectives. You will play a pivotal role in the planning and execution of autonomous vessel operations, contributing significantly to both testing and commissioning initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in maritime operations, exceptional problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities, and demonstrate effective leadership skills. A steadfast commitment to safety and adherence to maritime regulations is essential for ensuring the highest standards in vessel operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Vessel Operations:
  • Ensure the safe navigation and operation of the vessel at all times including when in autonomous control.
  • Effectively manage and supervise the onboard crew to foster a high‑performance team environment.
  • Collaborate with shoreside personnel and onboard crew to ensure successful testing of autonomous systems and adherence to commissioning plans.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of vessel missions aimed at developing and refining autonomous operating systems.
  • Lead all safety and emergency response efforts to maintain a secure onboard environment.
  • Maintain comprehensive logs of vessel operations to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Ensure compliance applicable USCG, SOLAS, IMO, and Class regulations to uphold the highest standards of maritime safety and operation.
External Coordination & Maritime Compliance:
  • Coordinate with port control, port authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard, pilot associations, and any relevant stakeholders to ensure proper access, compliance, and operational approvals for all on‑water activities.
  • Manage vessel movements, berth assignments, fueling, and dockside logistics in alignment with mission timelines.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date communication with regulatory bodies to support safe operations and ensure adherence to local and federal maritime regulations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for field operations involving internal and external maritime infrastructure and support services.
Required Qualifications:
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard 500/1600T Master License of Self‑propelled Vessels Upon Oceans. Unlimited Master’s license desired.
  • STCW Basic Training, GMDSS Operator, OICNW, Medical PIC, FCC License.
  • Proven experience in a senior officer role aboard crewed vessels in dynamic maritime environments.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety procedures, shipboard emergency procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to interpret nautical charts, weather forecasts, and navigational tools to support mission planning and execution.
  • Valid TWIC, USCG STCW Medical Certificate, and passport.
  • Strong knowledge in ship handling, voyage planning, marine navigation, port operations, and International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).
  • Able to maintain operational logs, maintenance records, and support inspection readiness.
  • Strong knowledge of USCG, SOLAS, and Class regulations and the ability to maintain vessel compliance.
  • Proficiency in voyage/route planning software, GIS tools, and maritime navigation systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross‑functional teams.
  • Must be able to stand a 12‑hour navigational watch.
  • Passing background check and USCG/DOT drug testing required.
  • Security clearance eligibility required.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity / experience with maneuvering characteristics of jet‑drive propelled vessels.
  • Experience with autonomous or unmanned systems is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with the DoD or other government agencies is a plus.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with team members, stakeholders, and senior management.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing challenges.
  • Strong leadership qualities, including the ability to motivate and inspire team members.
  • Projected rotation is 28/28.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to certify as “fit for work” by demonstrating ability to swim and tread water.
  • Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Will be exposed to marine environments, including sun, wind, rain, cold, and saltwater spray, often for extended periods.
  • Must be able to operate in daylight, low‑light, and night conditions using marine navigation systems and visual cues.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work i.e. stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time including up to 12 hours/day.
  • Climb and maintain balance on ladders, platforms, or other high structures.
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 10 hours a day, including over varied and uneven terrain.

  • Hearing ability sufficient to detect alarms, verbal instructions, and workplace hazards in a high‑noise environment.

  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to: safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hat and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines.
