Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. is seeking a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE) to join the ACx team. You will oversee testing and validation of electrical and mechanical infrastructure in AWS data centers and coordinate with vendors, contractors, and other teams.

Lead Factory Witness Testing, manage onsite commissioning, own project plans and schedules, and report progress to the Regional Commissioning Manager to ensure on‑time delivery of data center capacity.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning experience in electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required.
  • NETA or ASHRAE certification or commissioning education is preferred.

Responsibilities

As a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE), you will be part of a highly creative, efficient team tasked with building and supporting the operations of Amazon‑owned data centers. The Amazon Commissioning team (ACx) evaluates, defines, and manages construction quality to meet customer requirements. The CxE supports vendors, contractors, and other teams involved in commissioning systems such as:

  • Medium and low voltage power systems, generators
  • UPS
  • HVAC (air handlers / exhaust fans / VFD)
  • Chilled water systems
  • Building management systems (BMS)
  • Electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS)
  • Testing and balancing
  • Pumps and hydronic systems

US citizenship is required for this role.

Key job responsibilities
  • Provide testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including review of design documents and equipment submittals.
  • Lead Factory Witness Testing (FWT) and manage third‑party commissioning vendors during onsite pre‑functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
  • Own project success, deep dive to resolve technical issues, and address schedule impacts and coordination demands onsite.
  • Share lessons learned to drive team growth and program improvements.
  • Co‑design test scripts, schedule, and project plans, continuously auditing vendor activities for compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Prepare regular commissioning progress reports and metrics for the Regional Commissioning Manager, managing project budgets as approved by Finance.
  • Lead multiple projects simultaneously to achieve milestones and deliver data center capacity.
A day in the life
  • Coordinate with AWS engineering, capacity delivery, operations, and contractor teams; prioritize tasks; ensure each issue has a clear path to resolution.
  • Manage commissioning vendors, identify issues, determine criticality, propose solutions, and document findings.
  • Escalate risks to stakeholders when project turnover is at risk.
  • Communicate lessons learned upon project completion to peers and participate in initiatives that improve the commissioning program.
About the team

The AWS Data Center Commissioning Team (ACx) is an independent unit within the DCGS organization composed of veteran Electrical, Mechanical, Controls Engineers, Project Managers, and Operators. The team provides detailed engineering and operational review and testing of equipment designs, operational functionality, and construction practices, focusing on rapid delivery of quality products while maintaining transparency and recording metrics of defects discovered during commissioning.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning experience of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • NETA or ASHRAE certification or commissioning‑specific education.
  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission‑critical facilities, especially data centers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for the region.
  • Experience with commercial or industrial power or mechanical systems.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production.
  • Experience with web‑based and other software tools for calculation and data processing.

The base salary range for this position is $96,600 – $160,000 annually for USA, VA, Herndon. Your package will include sign‑on payments, restricted stock units (RSUs), and comprehensive benefits such as health, dental, vision, prescription, life insurance, EAP, mental health support, flexible spending accounts, adoption and surrogacy reimbursement, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
