This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus but will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent mix of experience/training.
  • 1–3 years of verified experience in building systems, MEP, facilities operations, or commissioning support.
  • Familiarity with HVAC, electrical, and controls; EIT or commissioning certifications encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Support commissioning and retro-commissioning efforts for existing buildings under Sr. agent.
  • Assist in developing commissioning plans, specs, and work plans.
  • Review submittals, sequences of operation, and building systems.
  • Execute testing scripts and pre-functional checklists; support field testing.
  • Participate in commissioning meetings with design teams and contractors.
  • Gather and evaluate energy data from EIS/EMS systems.
  • Support LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning documentation.

Job Description

Facilities Development and Management (FDM) seeks a Commissioning Agent I to support the Senior Commissioning Agent in commissioning and retro-commissioning projects for existing buildings and new construction. This role focuses on advancing campus energy and sustainability goals through active field testing, data review, system documentation, and corrective action verification of HVAC mechanical systems and controls.

This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus but will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.

This position will remain open until filled.

Responsibilities
  • Support commissioning and retro-commissioning efforts for existing buildings under the direction of the Sr. Commissioning Agent.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of comprehensive commissioning plans, specifications, and work plans.
  • Support new construction and CPMG Commissioning efforts by assisting with design reviews at multiple stages (Basis of Design, Design Development, Construction Documents).
  • Assist in reviewing submittals, shop drawings, sequences of operation, HVAC mechanical systems, controls, and associated building systems.
  • Execute testing scripts and pre-functional checklists, and support functional performance field testing for mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Participate in commissioning meetings with multidisciplinary design teams, contractors, and the Capital Programs Management Group (CPMG) during design, construction, turnover, and operational phases.
  • Gather and assist in evaluating Energy Information Systems (EIS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) control data.
  • Support LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning requirements by collecting necessary documentation and field data to ensure compliance with building performance standards.
Days and Schedule

Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm

Salary Range

$75,000 - $90,000 per year, commensurate experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent military/technical training.
  • Minimum of 1 to 3 years of verified experience in building systems, MEP design, facilities operations, or commissioning support roles. (Note: Alternative education and experience pathways may be considered, such as an unrelated degree with 3+ years of experience, or no degree with 5+ years of verified related experience).
  • Familiarity with complex building systems (HVAC, electrical, and controls).
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or actively working towards industry-recognized commissioning certifications (e.g., CxA, BCxP, CBCP).
  • Familiarity with LEED commissioning processes (Fundamental and Enhanced Cx).
  • Basic knowledge of ASHRAE guidelines, building automation/controls systems (BAS/BMS), and energy codes.
  • Exposure to testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) procedures and tools.
  • Experience in a university campus, large facility, or related institutional setting.
  • Experience with HVAC load calculation software (e.g., Trace or IES) or energy modeling software.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
