Job summary

Northstar Growth Companies in Bloomington, MN seeks a hands-on Controller to own financial controls across Commercial Investors Group, Velora Title, and Chillwater Cannabis Shop. This is a multi-entity, full-time role with responsibility for ledger integrity and month-end close.

The ideal candidate will audit ledgers, manage reporting, and drive 280E cannabis accounting insights. CPA preferred; must be MN-based and able to commute three days weekly to the Bloomington office.

Qualifications

• Commercial real estate net lease accounting and CAM reconciliation.
• Strong Google Sheets/Excel with advanced formulas and models.
• Proven systemization of accounting processes and adoption of technology including AI.
• Must be able to commute to Bloomington, MN three days per week.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting across all brands to maintain ledger integrity.
• Audit the general ledger monthly after bank reconciliations are complete.
• Audit accounts payable for duplicates and duplicate payments.
• Prepare insurance accrual schedules and post scorecard results to EOSone.
• Produce the monthly close packet and brand-level variance narratives.
• Handle information requests from lenders, brokerage team, and brand presidents.
• Prepare diligence folders for loans, sales, and acquisitions.
• Coordinate federal/state tax returns with the outside CPA; own K-1 prep and distribution.
• Oversee cannabis tax filings and implement 280E considerations across entities.
• Drive CFO scope targets through margin, pricing, and cost discipline; build budgets and forecasts.
• Negotiate insurance pricing and assist with property tax appeals.

ABOUT NORTHSTAR GROWTH COMPANIES

Northstar Growth Companies operates Commercial Investors Group, Velora Title, and Chillwater Cannabis Shop. We're hiring a full-time controller to own financial controls across all three brands and the AlphaDiv Real Estate Fund that CIG manages.

This is a hands-on seat. You will audit the ledger yourself, not review someone else's summary of it.

Compensation is base salary plus the Northstar Bonus and Investment Program.

Scorecard — What This Seat Supports (Brand — North Star Metric — Goal)

Chillwater Cannabis Shop — EBITDA Enterprise value — Goal: $5M EBITDA $25M value
Commercial Investors Group — Return on capital — Goal: 10%+ currently $750K/quarter
Velora Title — EBITDA — Goal: $500K

Scope of Work

Ledger Integrity

• Oversee day-to-day accounting across all brands to maintain ledger integrity
• Audit the general ledger each month after bank reconciliations are complete
• Flag every ledger entry that is not tied out to a bank statement
• Audit accounts payable for duplicate invoices and duplicate payments

Fund and Owner Capital

• Verify AIM matches APM for owner capital by comparing positions to the balance sheet
• Run net equity calculations for AlphaDiv using AIM assets, APM liabilities, and owner capital

Schedules and Reporting

• Prepare insurance accrual schedules
• Post scorecard results to EOSone
• Produce the monthly close packet and variance narrative by brand

Information Requests

• Handle all requests for information from lenders, the brokerage team, and brand presidents
• Prepare diligence folders for loan requests, sales, and acquisitions

Cannabis Accounting and 280E

• Separate COGS-eligible costs from non-deductible operating costs under Section 280E
• Document inventory costing and absorption methodology to support the COGS position
• Reconcile Dutchie sales and inventory data to the general ledger
• Apply the Minnesota state subtraction for federally disallowed 280E expenses

Tax Returns and Filings

• Coordinate federal and state returns for all entities with the outside CPA firm
• Own K-1 preparation, review, and distribution to investors
• Oversee sales, use, and cannabis gross receipts tax filings

CFO Scope

• Drive the scorecard targets above through margin, pricing, and cost discipline
• Build and maintain budgets and forecasts across the three brands
• Negotiate insurance pricing and prosecute property tax appeals across all assets

What We're Looking For

• Able to commute to our Bloomington, MN office three days per week

• CPA strongly preferred; MN-based
• AppFolio Property Manager, Yardi, or RealPage
• Controller-level ownership of a multi-entity GL, end to end
• AppFolio Investment Manager for investor reporting
