Location: Remote (U.S.-based) with Occasional Travel

Compensation: Hourly (1099 Independent Contractor)

Reports To: Director of Underwriting / Chief Underwriting Officer

Schedule: Flexible / As Needed

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and analytical Commercial P&C Underwriter to support our Captive Insurance operations. This is a 1099 contract role, primarily remote, with responsibility for conducting feasibility studies, underwriting complex risks, and placing insurance and reinsurance coverage in both the admitted and E&S markets.

The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in underwriting and coverage analysis, the ability to assess program structures and loss data, and established relationships with retail, wholesale, and carrier partners. This role does not involve generating new business leads but will be integral to analyzing and executing placement strategies for submissions generated by our internal production team.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct feasibility studies for new programs and accounts, including exposure analysis, loss trend evaluation, pricing strategy, and market suitability.
• Underwrite complex and specialty commercial P&C submissions, including property, general liability, excess liability, and niche lines.
• Design and recommend program structures, coverage terms, and pricing strategies based on underwriting and actuarial inputs.
• Secure terms and place coverage with appropriate markets—including admitted, E&S, and reinsurance partners—using established relationships and market access.
• Communicate and negotiate effectively with brokers, carriers, and reinsurers to deliver competitive and compliant solutions.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of underwriting decisions, placements, quotes, and correspondence in internal systems.
• Stay informed on market trends, carrier appetites, rating methodologies, and compliance issues across relevant jurisdictions.
• Assist in the development of underwriting guidelines, product offerings, and operational workflows as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

• 3+ years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, including program or complex account underwriting.
• Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, including the ability to interpret loss data, rating models, and actuarial projections.
• Must be proficient in utilizing technology and the Microsoft suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to enhance productivity and streamline tasks.
• Demonstrated experience placing insurance and/or facultative reinsurance coverage.
• Deep familiarity with E&S markets and wholesale distribution.
• Strong knowledge of coverage forms, manuscript endorsements, and program structure.
• Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Self-directed with the ability to manage workload independently in a remote environment.

Preferred:

• Prior experience in feasibility or underwriting support roles for MGAs, MGUs, or program administrators.
• Strong broker/carrier network, especially in E&S.
• Insurance licenses are a plus.

• Occasional travel may be required for team meetings or market visits (minimal and planned).
