Ex-Mil Recruitment Limited is seeking a Commercial Manager to join a specialist SME supplying equipment to UK MOD and Emergency Services. The role focuses on account management, customer relationships and the sales process, with opportunity to work on bids and procurement.
You'll build trusted relationships, translate requirements into practical equipment solutions, and collaborate with international suppliers. Flexible remote working with occasional UK travel to client sites.
Our client is an established specialist SME supplying equipment and solutions to the UK MOD, specialist military users and Emergency Services. They are looking for a Commercial Manager to join their close-knit team and take ownership of key customer relationships, commercial opportunities and the sales process.
This is an opportunity particularly suited to a Service Leaver OR former military professional who understands the customer, the environment and the challenges faced by end users and who wants to put that experience to work in a commercial setting. Ex Royal Engineers./Engineers could be a very strong fit, particularly someone with a good technical understanding.
This is not a traditional, high-volume or cold-calling sales role. The emphasis is on account management, customer relationships and business development, working with established MOD and government customers alongside a specialist international supply chain.
You'll understand customer requirements, build trusted relationships, identify opportunities and help develop the right equipment and solutions.
You'll also become involved in bids, procurement processes and longer-term opportunities - often working on projects where building the relationship and understanding the requirement comes well before the eventual purchase.
We're particularly interested in people who have operated on the customer/user side of Defence. You could be a Service Leaver with experience in a specialist military environment, acquisition, equipment or capability development - potentially at Captain level or equivalent. Or you may already have commercial experience working with MOD, Defence, Police, Emergency Services or government customers.
Experience or knowledge across areas such as electro-optics, thermal imaging, specialist clothing and equipment, load carriage, robotics or drones would be highly relevant.
You don't need to know everything on day one - product training will be provided.
For the right Service Leaver, this could be an excellent opportunity to take your military experience into a long-term commercial career without leaving the Defence environment behind. You’ll be working with specialist equipment, genuine end users and established Defence relationships, while developing your commercial and business-winning experience.
The company is an entrepreneurial SME, so your contribution will be visible. There's no large corporate structure or unnecessary bureaucracy - you'll have autonomy, responsibility and direct access to senior leadership. The role offers the opportunity to build on what you already know, rather than starting again.
Working pattern - Flexible working, ideally with office attendance typically around once a week or fortnight in Surrey, but client is happy to be flexible on this, depending where you are located. Travel - Some UK customer travel required; this is not an on-the-road sales role.
