Description

Position Summary

The Commercial Lighting Technician is responsible for performing interior and exterior lighting retrofit projects at commercial and retail facilities. This position involves removing and replacing existing lighting components and fixtures, installing LED lighting systems, and completing lighting upgrades in accordance with project specifications and company safety standards.

Lighting Technicians work primarily in active commercial and retail environments and must be comfortable performing work from ladders, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and other approved elevated work platforms.

This position requires travel to customer locations and project sites and may include daytime, evening, overnight, and weekend work depending on customer and project requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform commercial and retail lighting retrofit installations
  • Remove and replace existing lamps, ballasts, drivers, fixtures, and related lighting components
  • Install LED lamps, retrofit kits, fixtures, drivers, sensors, and lighting controls
  • Perform both interior and exterior lighting upgrades
  • Identify existing lighting equipment and verify replacement components against project specifications
  • Assemble, install, and replace commercial lighting fixtures and components
  • Perform basic lighting troubleshooting and identify defective components
  • Test completed installations to verify proper operation
  • Follow project drawings, fixture schedules, site documentation, and instructions provided by the Foreman or Project Manager
  • Safely operate scissor lifts, boom lifts, and other aerial work platforms
  • Perform work from ladders and elevated work platforms
  • Work safely around customers, store employees, merchandise, shelving, equipment, vehicles, and other contractors
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas throughout the project
  • Protect customer property and merchandise while performing work
  • Properly handle, stage, and dispose of removed lamps, fixtures, packaging, and other project materials
  • Assist with loading, unloading, staging, and inventorying project materials
  • Complete required project documentation, photographs, and other electronic reporting
  • Communicate project issues, material shortages, damaged equipment, or unexpected site conditions to the Foreman
  • Follow all Reliable Electric and Lighting, customer, OSHA, and site-specific safety requirements
  • Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Attend required safety meetings and training
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

Job Requirements
  • Previous commercial lighting, electrical, construction, maintenance, or similar field experience preferred
  • Experience with commercial lighting retrofit work strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with LED lighting systems and common commercial lighting components preferred
  • Ability and willingness to work at heights
  • Ability to safely work from ladders, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and aerial work platforms
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required aerial lift certifications
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to read basic project drawings, fixture schedules, and installation instructions
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a project team
  • Ability to maintain productivity while performing repetitive retrofit installations
  • Ability to communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and store personnel
  • Ability to use a smartphone or tablet for project documentation and communication
  • Dependable attendance and ability to report to assigned projects as scheduled
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required by project assignments
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and extended shifts when required
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record when driving is required for the position
  • Must successfully complete all required pre-employment screening
Physical Requirements

This position requires regular physical activity associated with commercial lighting installation and construction work. Employees must be able to:

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work overhead
  • Regularly climb and work from ladders
  • Work from scissor lifts, boom lifts, and other elevated work platforms
  • Work at significant heights while utilizing required fall-protection equipment
  • Frequently use hands and arms to operate tools and install equipment above shoulder level
  • Lift, carry, position, and install lighting fixtures, tools, equipment, and materials
  • Regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with assistance or mechanical means used when appropriate for heavier or awkward loads
  • Work for extended periods while standing or performing overhead tasks
  • Safely enter, exit, and maneuver within aerial lifts and other equipment
Work Environment

Lighting Technicians perform work in a variety of commercial environments, including retail stores, warehouses, parking lots, building exteriors, loading areas, and other customer facilities.

Employees may be exposed to:

  • Indoor and outdoor weather conditions
  • Hot and cold temperatures
  • Elevated work areas
  • Construction and maintenance environments
  • Dust, noise, and other normal jobsite conditions
  • Active customer and vehicle traffic
  • Nighttime and overnight working conditions

Employees are expected to recognize jobsite hazards, follow established safety procedures, and immediately report unsafe conditions to their Foreman or supervisor.
