Job description

The Commercial Credit Underwriter (CCU) position is designed to prepare individuals for roles such as Portfolio Manager I or other Credit Professional positions through on-the-job training and experience within a Lending Team environment. CCUs report directly to the Commercial Credit Officer and are primarily accountable to their assigned Credit Team, with indirect accountability to Regional Managers, Lending Center Managers, and Loan Officers. Performance reviews are conducted by the Commercial Credit Officer with input from relevant managers and officers.

The CCU utilizes their credit skills to underwrite a portfolio of commercial real estate (CRE) and C&I loans, working closely with Portfolio Managers and Lending Officers who develop and service various commercial loans and lines of credit.

Under the guidance of the Commercial Credit Officer, the CCU is responsible for underwriting, evaluating, and making independent decisions or recommendations on commercial loan requests. This includes assessing obligor risk ratings for new and existing relationships to ensure credit quality and soundness.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the approval and commitment process, ensuring compliance with Loan Policy/Underwriting and Administration Guidelines (LUAG) and accuracy of documentation.
  • Gaining familiarity with systems used by Portfolio Managers to monitor and manage loan portfolios and client relationships.
  • Supporting timely renewals of loan maturities and completing annual reviews of banking relationships.
  • Using RTC's Covenant Monitoring system to test covenants and prepare waivers and Reservation of Rights letters as needed.
  • Facilitating borrower financial reporting submissions, evaluating financial performance, and assisting in obtaining necessary information from clients.
  • Adhering to compliance and operational risk controls according to standards and policies.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Core competencies include making independent credit decisions based on thorough analysis of the business and guarantor's capacity to repay, and communicating effectively with credit applicants under guidance from senior personnel.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or equivalent experience.
  • At least one year of commercial credit analysis experience; CRE loan experience is a plus.
  • Formal credit training is advantageous.
  • Ability to analyze financial statements, tax returns, and valuation reports.
  • Proficiency in writing credit memorandums, summaries, and business correspondence.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word; experience with nCino preferred.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with strong initiative, accountability, and attention to detail, capable of working independently and in teams.
