Job description

Position Overview

This position may be located within the M&T Bank Commercial footprint.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage the ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring activities, including annual reviews, interim updates, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other credit surveillance measures.
  2. Review all pertinent credit and financial information, such as financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureau reports, appraisals, internal credit data, industry research, and peer data. Determine if further investigation or additional information is required.
  3. Analyze financial information and related materials to perform ongoing credit monitoring, focusing on identifying emerging risks or material changes in customers' financial positions, including compliance with loan agreements. Provide independent credit quality assessments with well-supported risk ratings, credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, and financial trends.
  4. Coordinate between Commercial Banking Relationship Managers and the Underwriting Team to facilitate credit needs, including documenting and tracking relevant information, reports, and memos to ensure timely credit approvals and adherence to risk ratings.
  5. Spread financial statements and prepare financial models to assess various conditions impacting transactions, including cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivities, and guarantor analyses.
  6. Monitor the credit performance of customer portfolios and escalate or remediate issues as appropriate.
  7. Ensure timely completion of monitoring activities and compliance with credit policies by verifying adherence and evaluating risks associated with non-compliance.
  8. Present analysis and respond to questions during credit discussions or presentations.
  9. Attend client calls with Relationship Managers to understand client/business operations for effective reviews, renewals, and monitoring.
  10. Adhere to compliance and operational risk controls in line with company and regulatory standards.
  11. Promote an environment of inclusion that reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  12. Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and addressing issues raised by external regulators.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Scope

The Commercial Credit Portfolio Management Department oversees the ongoing monitoring of the bank’s commercial loans to ensure accurate risk ratings and policy compliance. This role involves interaction with Relationship Managers across the bank’s footprint, managing portfolios typically exceeding $30MM, and works independently with limited supervision. There may be client interaction.

Management Responsibilities

Input into training of junior or newly hired Portfolio Managers.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement analysis, or similar. Alternatively, a minimum of 9 years of combined higher education and relevant work experience, including 5 years in commercial credit or related fields.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong analytical abilities are required.

Compensation and Location

Salary range: $93,614.36 - $156,023.93 USD. Compensation will depend on the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience.
