Construction Estimator Skills and Qualifications

A successful construction estimator will have the following skills:

  • Preparing estimates of labor, material costs, general expenses and overheads
  • Operating computer software programs
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, maps, drawings and project specifications
  • Understanding and being able to advise on the tendering process
  • Setting up cost monitoring and reporting systems
  • Maintaining a directory of suppliers and trade contractors
  • Collaborating with engineers, architects, owners and contractors
  • Supporting both greenfield and brownfield projects

Suitable candidates will have one of the following Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field
  • Certification from a recognized professional body, such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE)
  • Trade Journeyman Certificate and 5+ years of experience in construction estimating

Other Qualifications and Skills:

  • 10+ years of previous experience in construction estimating
  • Proficiency in using industry standard software such as PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, ProEst and Bluebeam Revu
  • Strong understanding of construction methods and materials
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with local building codes and regulations
  • Strong understanding of construction practices, materials, and cost estimating techniques
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills
