Job summary

The Village of Pleasant Prairie is seeking a Commercial Building Inspector for the Building Inspections Department. This full-time, non-exempt position conducts plan reviews, on-site inspections, and code enforcement for commercial, industrial, institutional, and multifamily projects, with some residential duties as needed.

The role requires coordinating with Village departments, responding to inquiries, and maintaining accurate records, with a typical schedule Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews permit and construction plans for commercial, industrial, multifamily, and residential buildings to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Conducts on-site building inspections during construction and remodeling.
  • Interprets and enforces applicable building, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, accessibility, and related codes.
  • Performs permit fee tabulations, tracks inspection time, and maintains records.
  • Processes permits, inspections, and related documentation in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates with Village departments regarding building, fire, life safety, and code interpretations.
  • Receives and responds to calls, emails, and inquiries regarding permit requirements and compliance.
  • Reviews damaged buildings for safe occupancy following fires, storms, or incidents.
  • Communicates with the public, developers, engineers, architects, and contractors about code requirements.
  • Assists with residential inspections during periods of increased workload.
  • Maintains professionalism and adheres to Village policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties within the Building Inspections Department.

Job description

The Commercial Building Inspector is a full-time, non-exempt, skilled & technical position within the Building Inspections Department of the Village of Pleasant Prairie and reports directly to the Director of Building Inspections. This position is primarily responsible for providing effective and efficient commercial inspection services, plan review, and code enforcement for commercial, industrial, institutional, and multifamily construction projects within the Village. The Commercial Building Inspector also assists with residential inspection services and related activities as operational needs require to ensure timely and responsive service to the Pleasant Prairie community.

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m

Job Duties

  • Reviews permit and construction plans for commercial, industrial, multifamily, and residential buildings to be constructed, altered, repaired, moved or demolished to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Conducts on-site building inspection of commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional construction within the Village during the various stages of construction and remodeling.
  • Interprets and enforces applicable building, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, accessibility, and related codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Performs tabulations of permit fee requirements, tracks time for inspection activities, and maintains accurate inspection and permit records.
  • Performs accurate and timely processing of permits, inspections, and related documentation.
  • Coordinates with Village legal, planning, engineering, public works, fire, and police departments regarding building, fire, life safety, and other code interpretations, applications, and enforcement.
  • Receives and responds to calls, emails, and inquiries regarding permit requirements, construction standards, and code compliance.
  • Reviews damaged buildings for safe occupancy following fires, storms, and other incidents.
  • Consults with and communicates effectively with the public, developers, engineers, architects, property owners, contractors, and provides necessary information regarding code and ordinance requirements.
  • Assists with residential inspections and plan reviews during periods of increased workload, staff absences, or as otherwise assigned.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and adheres to all Village & Department policies and procedures and enforces applicable Village codes and ordinances.
  • Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Building Inspections Department.
