Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of underwriting and rating activities for placement of eligible risks in various State Commercial Auto Plans.
  • Offer technical support to staff performing complex underwriting duties in accordance with State Commercial Auto Plan procedures.
  • Provide leadership and expertise to underwrite the largest and most complex policy applications, renewals, policy changes, and cancellations to determine risk acceptability and coverage.
  • Perform customer service functions including handling complex inquiries from insureds and producers, companies, and insurance departments.
  • Interpret Plan rules to Producers, insureds, and companies where necessary and coordinate underwriting activities with related departments.
  • Coordinate and conduct training of staff and other personnel; perform underwriting quality control reviews and maintain quality performance reports.

Job description

AIPSO is a management organization and service provider for various insurance industry groups responsible for administering the residual market. We are a national organization that serves local customer needs. Centralization and standardization are key to many AIPSO services because of the inherent economies of scale and other efficiencies. However, our organization is based on customer focus and recognizes the need for flexibility in serving customer groups with diverse interests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight of underwriting and rating activities for placement of eligible risks in various State Commercial Auto Plans.
  • Offer technical support to staff performing complex underwriting duties in accordance with State Commercial Auto Plan procedures.
  • Provide leadership and expertise to underwrite the largest and most complex policy applications, renewals, policy changes, and cancellations to determine risk acceptability and coverage.
  • Perform customer service functions to include response to more complex telephone inquiries. Including inquiries and complaints from insured’s producers, companies, and insurance departments.
  • Determine and compile rating criteria (CASP Inspections, premium audits, MVR, questionnaire, and other information sources) to maximize premium.
  • Review underwriting guidelines and procedures and provides final approval.
  • Coordinate all underwriting related activity with other related departments.
  • Perform underwriting quality control reviews, maintain quality performance reports.
  • Interpret Plan rules to Producers, insureds, and companies where necessary.
  • Coordinate and conduct training of staff and other personnel.
Specifications / Qualifications
Education

Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) from a four-year college or university with supplementary insurance education preferred. CPCU or other insurance designations and /or additional appropriate experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience

5 or more years of commercial underwriting experience, including commercial auto garage and truckers. Previous experience and knowledge of residual market automobile insurances plan rules and regulations preferred.

Knowledge
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office productivity tools (e.g., Outlook, Word, Teams) to manage work. Advanced skills using Microsoft excel for analysis and reporting.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, including ability to analyze complex issues, find the root cause of the problem and consider a wide range of alternatives before acting and applying to appropriate processing systems.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals.
  • Ability to multi-task and demonstrate flexibility while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and interact professionally and effectively in a cross functional team environment.
  • Familiarity with formalized project management methodology is a plus.
  • Knowledge of insurance industry, particularly the residual market automobile insurance industry preferred.
  • Salary Range: $50,000 - 112,900 Annual. Actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity, and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; internal equity and other conditions of employment.
